Job summary

This is the first advert for this 1-year locum consultant post, with a view to this becoming a substantive job in the near future. We are an established team of 4 consultants who work alongside specialist nurses and physiotherapists, clinical fellow with the only RCS-certified Paediatric Orthopaedic fellowship in the country, deanery and CESR trainees, and a nationally-renowned Gait Lab.

The service provides an elective Paediatric Orthopaedic service to the Oxford region, working closely with a multidisciplinary team, and developing the service further to support colleagues in regional hospitals across Thames Valley. We are looking for a colleague who can help us towards building this service further.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high quality secondary and tertiary paediatric orthopaedic service to the children and adolescents of Oxfordshire and Thames Valley, and neighbouring counties.

To support the multidisciplinary team, and participate in multidisciplinary meetings

To support and continue to develop clinical collaboration with other paediatric services in Oxford and Buckinghamshire, especially where this may impact on paediatric orthopaedic provision.

To develop further paediatric training in orthopaedics with support of Locally and Nationally appointed trainees and provide orthopaedic teaching for other undergraduate and postgraduate trainees

To comply with the recommendations of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, National GIRFT (‘Getting it Right First Time’) review of Paediatric Orthopaedics, and the Royal College of Surgeons for the provision of acute and specialty services for children.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with license to practise
  • MB ChB or equivalent FRCS (T&O) or equivalent
  • Trained to level 3 children’s safeguarding
  • CCT or equivalent in orthopaedic surgery

Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive training in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, and fellowship experience (or equivalent) as a paediatric orthopaedic fellow in a major unit
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Good leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
  • Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
  • Good written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills. Must be a good team player
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
  • Participation in clinical research GCP training or equivalent
