Swansea Bay University Health Board is undertaking a significant transformation to become a clinically led organisation, with Care Groups designed around patient need, pathways and outcomes.

As Care Group Nurse Director you will provide senior clinical leadership and professional accountability across the Care Group. Working as part of the triumvirate leadership team, you will hold joint accountability for quality, safety and patient experience, ensuring services deliver consistently high standards of care.

You will lead clinical governance, promote learning and improvement, and ensure patient, family and carer voices help shape service design and delivery. The role requires an inspirational leader who can foster professional excellence, psychological safety and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Main duties of the job

o Lead service transformation and sustainability initiatives, contributing to the development and delivery of annual and mediumterm strategic and operational plans. Ensure services are designed to be responsive, efficient, and aligned with population healthneeds and quality standards, while actively monitoring performance to drive continuous improvement and system-wide impact.o Champions a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and compassionate leadership. The role plays a pivotal part in shapingand sustaining a positive, inclusive, and values-driven culture, fostering psychological safety, staff wellbeing, and a strong sense ofpurpose across multidisciplinary teams.o Provides expert strategic, operational, and professional leadership for nursing and midwifery services across the Care Group andis clinically accountable for the development and delivery of high-quality, safe, and compassionate care, ensuring that the needs ofpatients and their families are prioritised.o Responsible for the professional regulation of all NMC registrants, overseeing workforce development to ensure safe, personcentred care. Accountable for maintaining safe staffing levels in line with relevant legislation and service standards, providingassurance to the Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery and the Chief of Care Group, and proposing solutions to address anyidentified risks or deficits.o Participates in the Gold On-Call rota, and deputising for Executive lead

Essential Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) with appropriate field specific registration. Masters qualification (or evidence of in-depth professional knowledge and equivalent experience). Plus, extensive knowledge over a range of disciplines e.g., professional nursing/midwifery agenda, quality governance, risk management, clinical research and audit, HR, finance, service planning and underpinned by specialist courses or equivalent experience. This level of knowledge would have been obtained over a significant period of senior management posts held within an NHS organisation.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in healthcare leadership, quality improvement, or clinical governance. Coaching qualification. Fellowship or membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., FNF, RCN, QNI).

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in a relevant senior leadership role within an NHS organisation or equivalent, of strategic planning and development
  • Experience of implementation and/or leading a quality management system i.e., the functions of quality control, quality assurance, quality planning and quality improvement.
  • Experience of working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including external partners and successful track record of influence and engagement.

  • Ability to exercises sound clinical and operational decision-making in complex scenarios, with clear evidence of risk management and ethical practice. Can implement robust quality and safety frameworks, achieving measurable improvements in compliance and patient safety.
  • Ability to deliver initiatives that demonstrably enhance patient experience, clinical outcomes, and safety standards. Develops senior nursing leaders and advanced practitioners through structured coaching and career progression support.
  • Ability to engage effectively at board level, influencing policy and presenting complex information with clarity to diverse stakeholders. Builds multi-professional partnerships across organisational boundaries, improving patient and staff outcomes.
  • Can interpret data to inform service redesign and quality improvement, achieving measurable outcomes. Successfully navigates high-pressure situations and organisational change with composure and flexibility.

Desirable

  • Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
