An opportunity has arisen for a substantive Band 8a Clinical Counselling Psychologist / Specialist Psychological Therapist post working in the new Maternal Mental Health Service within the Paediatric and Women’s Health Psychology service at Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals Trust.
The paediatric and women’s health psychology service is a thriving department, which is committed to child and family centred care. There are opportunities for professional development through regular CPD, involvement in service improvement projects, and supervision. The paediatric and women’s health psychology service is part of the wider department of Psychology in Healthcare, enabling collaboration and support with adult psychology colleagues. There are also close links with the doctorate clinical psychology courses at Newcastle and Teeside Universities.
The post will involve seeing women under the care of NUTH Maternity Services for assessment and therapy. This is a brand new service, and the post holder will work closely with the Consultant Clinical Psychologist to develop clinical pathways, robust processes for service evaluation, developing Patient Participation and Involvement in developing the new service.

Main duties of the job
Work with women, birthing people and their partners receiving all or elements of their maternity/ neonatal care through NUTH, who are experiencing distress in relation to their pregnancy, maternity and birth experience, or those whose babies are admitted to the neonatal inpatient unit.
This will include those experiencing birth trauma, pregnancy-related anxiety and baby loss and bereavement
Provide a specialised and experienced psychological therapy service for patients with the most complex /challenging presentations, by assessing and treating own specialist caseload of patients, plus maintaining associated records. Provide this service across all sectors of care; providing specialist psychological assessment, formulation and therapy.
Provide supervision and reflective practice space to both staff in psychology roles (e.g. Assistant Psychologist) and non-psychology colleagues (e.g. specialist midwives)
Offer advice and consultation on patients’ psychological care to multidisciplinary teams, including medical, surgical and ward-based teams Liaise with relevant external services (e.g. Perinatal mental Health services, safeguarding teams).
Provide teaching and training (e.g. on DClin Psy; to wider maternity staff) Promote and assist the development of a trauma informed culture of care within wider maternity services
Utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.
