An exciting opportunity has arisen within the picturesque setting of Carmarthenshire for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work within the Youth Justice Team and wider Youth Support Service covering the Carmarthenshire locality.

You will be working at a universal, targeted and specialist level supporting children and young people who are currently accessing the Youth Justice Team and wider Youth Support Service. You will be involved in direct assessment and intervention, developing and implementing training packages for other professionals, liaising with the Carmarthenshire Local Authority, and representing our Health Board at regional events.

You will work in close collaboration with the local authority. There will be opportunities to network with other staff in education and health and to support the development of innovative service delivery options to engage children and young people with complex speech, language and communication needs.

Main duties of the job

You will also be part of the wider Hywel Dda Health Board’s team of Speech & Language Therapists working across the Health Board area to deliver Speech and Language Therapy in close cooperation with other professional colleagues. The successful applicant will have opportunities at the operational and strategic level.

To be responsible for the operational management and delivery of the speech & language therapy service for a particular clinical area or client group.

To act as a highly specialist speech & language therapist, taking a County and/or Health Board wide lead in a specialist clinical area, being professionally accountable for service planning, standards and quality in this area.

To deputise for the head of speech & language therapy and/or service lead in matters relating to the provision of a specialist clinical area, and other nominated areas as required.

To identify training needs of Speech and Language Therapy staff, carers, and other professionals, and to develop and deliver training as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Degree in Speech & Language Therapy
  • Evidence of successful completion of training/specialist short courses up to Masters Degree or equivalent level, and relevant to area of clinical expertise
  • Dysphagia competencies mapped to Enhanced level of the Royal College for Speech and Language Therapists Eating, Drinking and Swallowing Competency Framework, 2025.
  • HCPC registration
  • RCSLT Membership
  • Member of Relevant CEN/SIG/PPG
  • Knowledge and experience of working with patients who have a learning disability including a wide range of specialist assessment tools and procedures and therapeutic interventions
  • Extensive experience of managing complex cases relevant to the area of expertise
  • Understanding of key policies, documents, guidelines and legislation relevant to the role

Desirable

  • Basic Counselling
  • Knowledge of a range of research approaches
  • Understanding of principles of change management

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive post registration clinical experience relevant to the post including proven caseload management, time management skills and management of change
  • Experience of audit / service evaluation
  • Delivering highly specialist training to a range of audiences
  • Supporting less experienced staff, including SLT Associate Practitioners, and SLT Student placements, inclusive of assessment, and experience of providing second opinions to SLTs and other professionals
  • Demonstrable leadership experience

Desirable

  • Delivering therapy through the medium of Welsh
  • Supervision/line management of SLTs

Other

Essential

  • Able to work in a variety of sites based upon service need
  • Have a full drivers’ licence and access to a car, to travel across the county in order to undertake home visits in a timely manner, whilst transporting necessary equipment
  • Flexible approach to service needs and in responding to work pressures

  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
