We are looking for a fellowship-trained children’s orthopaedic surgeon to contribute to our developing paediatric orthopaedic service, with elective and trauma work and close working with our paediatric department, as part of our forward-thinking and expanding Trauma and Orthopaedic department at Milton Keynes University Hospital. This post is one of four new Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic posts, alongside Hip & Knee Arthroplasty, Orthopaedic Spine and Shoulder & Elbow (with an interest in Upper Limb Trauma).
This is a less than full time post of up to 5.5 PAs. The job plan is pro rata to 8 DCC : 2 SPA.
The post includes a share of general trauma on call, adult and paediatric, at 1 in 24, so we are looking for a surgeon who has maintained broad trauma skills.
MKUH is a University Teaching Hospital in partnership with the University of Buckingham, with undergraduate teaching delivered through the Buckingham and Oxford medical schools.
MKUH works in a network with Oxford University Hospitals for some complex work, including major trauma, sarcoma, complex paediatrics and, through the Oxford Bone Infection Unit, complex infection work.
Main duties of the job
o Provide elective children’s orthopaedic care, including hip dysplasia, clubfoot, lower limb deformity and neuromuscular conditions.
o Lead paediatric trauma care and fracture clinic supervision, including safeguarding.
o Work closely with paediatricians, the emergency department and therapies, and continue established links with Oxford University Hospitals for shared care and complex referrals.
o Contribute to the general trauma on-call rota, adult and paediatric, at 1 in 24.
o Develop transition and community pathways for children with orthopaedic conditions.
o Teach and supervise students and doctors in training, and act as named educational supervisor where appropriate.
o Take part in annual job planning, appraisal and revalidation, with support from the New Consultant Development Programme and a named mentor.
Informal visits and discussions are welcome and encouraged after shortlisting. Interview dates to be confirmed. We expect the post to start from the candidate’s first availability, with flexibility for notice periods and for those completing training.
Applications are welcome from doctors within six months of their CCT date at the time of interview.
