Job Summary

o Nursing associate is a new role being introduced into the health and care workforce in England from 2019. Nursing associates are intended to bridge a gap between health and care assistants, and registered nurses

  • Nursing associates act in the best interests of people, putting them first and providing nursing care that is person-centred, safe and compassionate
  • Nursing associates play an active role as members of interdisciplinary teams, collaborating and communicating effectively with nurses, a range of other health and care professionals and lay carers
  • Nursing associates contribute to the provision of care for people, including those with complex needs

Main duties of the job

Develop understanding of all elements of the nursing process and be able to assist the registered nurse in the on-going assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care.

Perform and record clinical observations including ; o accurately measure weight and height, calculate body mass index and recognise healthy ranges and clinically significant low/high readings o use manual techniques and devices to take, record and interpret vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration (TPR), blood pressure (BP) and pulse oximetry in order to identify signs of improvement, deterioration or concern.

To undertake venepuncture and routine ECG recording o measure and interpret blood glucose levels.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register
  • Nursing Associate Foundation Degree or equivalent
  • GCSE Grade A-C in Maths & English or skills level 2 or equivalent

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in teams under appropriate supervision as part of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Insight on how to evaluate own strengths and development needs seeking advice where appropriate
  • Experience of providing and receiving complex sensitive information

Knowledge, Skills Aptitude

Essential

  • Awareness and Knowledge of the dignity in care agenda.
  • Understanding of the scope of the role of the nursing associate in the context of the nursing and broader healthcare team.
  • Awareness of how the role can contribute to service development
  • Understands and acts in accordance with the NMC professional standards for practice defined within the code
  • Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert advice and help
  • Understands the importance of following procedures and treatment plans as defined by the Registered Healthcare Professional
  • Ability to evidence/demonstrate key values and behaviours in line with the Trust framework
  • Ability to take part in reflective practice and clinical supervision
  • Understand requirements for NMC professional revalidation
  • Ability to organise and plan own delegated workload
