Job Summary

The cancer physiotherapy team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust are calling for a dynamic, and motivated individual, looking for an opportunity to join our Cancer Therapy Team working within the award-winning Guy’s Cancer Centre.

One opportunity exists for an experienced personal trainer, or Band 3 or 4 rehabilitation instructors, looking to develop their skills in cancer rehabilitation and work in an outpatient team.

Applicants would ideally have previous experience of working with people with cancer or a strong desire to do so. The applicants would be providing person-centred assessments and intervention to cancer patients throughout their treatment pathway from prehabilitation to rehabilitation. Successful applicants will be involved in leading one to one and group exercise sessions, delivering these either remotely or in-person, as well as carrying out administrative tasks to support the team.The post holders will be required to support service developments and show flexibility when adapting to and leading change. Excellent communication, organisational and information technology skills are essential for the roles.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To lead and participate in physical activity and exercise interventions either face to face, by telephone or over virtual platforms, in 1:1 or group formats, for patients with a cancer diagnosis awaiting treatment (prehabilitation), currently receiving treatment or following treatment.
  • To provide individualised advice, information and support using motivational interviewing skills based on risk assessment and patient choice to support patients to become more physically active. This will involve devising individual patient care plans including screening, onward referral, information delivery, goal setting, and identification of barriers, coping strategies and plans for monitoring.
  • You will be expected to carry your own caseload of patients and you will have access to a well-equipped gym, with a wide variety of machines, free weights and equipment to enable you to deliver tailored exercise interventions.
  • To promote the Guy’s Cancer physical activity pathway, and to be activity involved in health promotion during all stages of patient care.
  • To participate in team projects, service development and in-house training.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Personal training qualification

Desirable

  • Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation trained
  • Degree in Sports Science or equivalent sports related degree
  • Training in Motivational Interviewing
  • Yoga/Pilates trained

Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of working as a gym instructor or personal trainer, with groups and individuals, screening, assessing and designing exercise programmes
  • Worked in team and contributed to the smooth-running of the team / department
  • Experience presenting information to a group or 1:1 setting using communication styles to support behaviour change
  • Experience of maintaining a caseload of patients / clients

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people with cancer or other chronic conditions in an exercise setting
  • Experience using Motivational Interviewing in people with long term conditions
