Job summary

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a General Practitioner to join the Ambulatory Emergency Care Team at Lymington New Forest Hospital (LNFH) for a 4-session-per-week role. The post is based within the Forest Assessment Centre (FAC), a Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service that provides rapid assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management for patients referred as emergencies who do not require admission to an inpatient ward.

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, assessing patients referred through the on-call triage service, making timely clinical decisions, initiating treatment plans, and supporting safe discharge or onward referral where appropriate. The role requires expertise in acute medical care, strong clinical judgement, excellent communication skills, and a thorough understanding of both hospital and community-based healthcare services to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care in the right setting.

Working within a modern ambulatory care environment, the post holder will contribute to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, helping to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions while maintaining safe and effective clinical outcomes for the local population of the New Forest area.

Main duties of the job

Assess, diagnose, and manage patients attending the Forest Assessment Centre (FAC) who are suitable for Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), ensuring timely and effective clinical decision-making.

Provide high-quality ambulatory emergency care, including assessment, treatment, observation, investigation, and onward referral where appropriate.

Work collaboratively with consultants, senior decision makers, Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs), nursing staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe and effective patient care.

Support the ANP-led triage service, particularly during morning triage periods, by providing clinical advice and assisting with decisions regarding admission avoidance, patient management, and appropriate care pathways.

Identify patients who can be safely managed within community services and facilitate appropriate referrals to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.
