Job Summary

Radiotherapy is the use of radiation to damage and kill diseased cells. Its main use is found in cancer treatment, where it canbe used on its own, or as part of a wider treatment, which may also involve surgery or chemotherapy. TherapeuticRadiographers work in the radiotherapy department to plan and deliver radiotherapy.

The radiotherapy department at NNUH is a networked, paperless department. We have a managed service contract whichallows us to purchase and maintain state of the art radiotherapy equipment, including a fleet of five Varian TrueBeam linearaccelerators, two CT simulators, a Varian Bravos brachytherapy unit and an Xstrahl 150 superficial unit. Our dosimetryplanning is radiographer-led, predominately using VMAT and IMRT. We also have radiographer-led on-treatment review andradiotherapy late effects services.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for forward thinking, team players, who want to take up this exciting degree apprenticeship opportunity. The successful candidates will study to gain a BSc (Hons) Degree in Therapeutic Radiography whilst working in the radiotherapy department. The degree apprenticeship will be delivered as a 3-year programme in Therapeutic Radiography with on-the-job training and specific academic support from the University of Hertfordshire (20% protected time). Most of the taught element of your degree apprenticeship will be undertaken remotely, although there will be a short placement at theuniversity base each year. On completion of the training period, the employee will be expected to qualify as a TherapeuticRadiographer and gain HCPC registration in order to practice.

The Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer is part of a team who is responsible for planning and delivering high quality treatment to cancer patients. The radiotherapy department is open weekdays between 7.00 and 20:00 and your shifts willbe allotted between these hours.

Job responsibilities

1. With a high level of skill and accuracy, to assist in the delivery of radiotherapy treatments using external beam radiation and/or sealed sources.

2. To assist the therapeutic radiographers in the planning and marking up of patients treatments alongside clinicians and other team members.

3. To be actively involved in the pre/post planning processes, including treatment course scheduling, calculations for treatment dose and programming of the treatment plan using computer systems.

4. To actively undertake QA procedures within the department, including: Responsibility for preparation of Radiotherapy treatment and planning machines, for daily clinical use Invivo dosimetry monitoring daily radiation dose to the patient Treatment image review, including on-line corrections Fault Reporting

5. To ensure patients holistic needs are cared for, by involving other health care professionals where necessary.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • 2 GCSE passes at grade C or grade 4 and above including Mathematics, English language or literature. Level 2 equivalent literacy & numeracy qualifications will be accepted.
  • Plus one of the following: o 120 UCAS points from 3 A levels. Or equivalent from national BTEC qualifications e.g.: extended diploma in applied science, health science or health studies.
  • Successful completion of an Access to HE Diploma in health studies, health science, nursing, or another science-based course.
  • If you are taking an Access course not listed, please contact the University to discuss prior to application.
  • Previous degree in a related subject.
  • Evidence of successful formal accredited study at level 3 and a minimum of 6 months experience in a health and social care capacity
  • For candidates whose first language is not English
  • Candidates must have the following minimum International English Language Test Score (IELTS) results at the time of applying: 7.0 overall or equivalent. 7.0 in the listening and reading sections. 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections.
