Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for you to use and develop your psychological skills and experience working with men with psychological and mental difficulties and forensic histories at Langdon Hospital.

As a Band 5 Assistant Psychologist you will working as part of a psychology team to provide specialist psychological interventions to the patients at Langdon Hospital and developing your clinical and forensic assessment and therapy skills. There are opportunities to work with a range of psychological issues including Trauma, psychosis, personality difficulties alongside risk issues. The service offers a range of therapeutic approaches in order to address the presenting needs of the patients.

You will be using your experience for forensic mental health settings to support the development of Assistant Psychologists within the department and will take a role in leadership on key projects within the department alongside members of the psychology team.

 

Main duties of the job

The principal purpose of the role is to improve the psychological health & wellbeing of people with mental health difficulties within Secure Services

Providing a Psychology and Psychological Therapies service to service users at Langdon Hospital as a key component of integrated mental health and wellbeing services to Devon Partnership Trust

Implement specific assessment clinical care and psychological interventions and provide advice and consultancy to patients, family members, carers and professionals under the supervision and management of the Professional Lead

The post holder will be supported by senior colleagues within the Langdon Hospital

The post holder will be expected to make good use of the expertise of others within the service to further develop their clinical skills with this client group.

To work independently within a defined managed and occupational context. To work within professional guidelines and Devon Partnership Trust procedures and protocols

To support qualified members of the psychology team with the development of training programmes and have some involvement in the delivery of elements of training programmes under the supervision of a qualified member of the psychology team

To provide support and guidance to Band 4 psychologists including supporting their induction into the service and holding meetings.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BA or BSc in either Psychology or modular studies or related fields recognised by the British Psychological Society.

Experience

Essential

  • Post Graduate Clinical placement and/or supervised practise in mental health and / or Forensic services as an assistant psychologist, research assistant or equivalent.
  • Experience of providing leadership support / guidance or mentoring to others

Desirable

  • Further training in clinical setting forensic services.
  • Some further training in one or more psychological therapy.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a wide range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings.
  • Experience, and/or training in diversity awareness and social inequality.
  • Experience gained during supervised training of working forensic care
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision

  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to integrate complex data; make evaluations, formulations and decisions.
  • Organisation and time management skills.
  • Maintain C&R training in accordance with Trust Policy.
  • Ability to work independently within defined occupational procedures and use initiative within a mental health setting.

  • Ability to tolerate ambiguity and maintain own morale and motivation in challenging service delivery contexts.
  • A willingness to work flexible hours including the Langdon Hospital shift rota.
  • Maintain C&R training in accordance with Trust Policy.

Desirable

  • Small scale project management.
