An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our innovative and dynamic Memory Assessment Service (MAS).

The Memory Assessment Service supports individuals aged 18 and over who are registered with a Birmingham or Solihull GP. We specialise in assessing people experiencing memory and/or cognitive difficulties, particularly in the context of suspected dementia.

You will be joining a highly skilled, supportive, and forward-thinking multidisciplinary team, offering an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in cognitive assessment and dementia care.

Main duties of the job

This varied and rewarding role involves:

  • Delivering specialist occupational therapy assessments focusing on functional ability, considering cognitive, physical, sensory, and mental health aspects
  • Analysing performance skills to inform comprehensive memory assessments and contribute to the diagnostic process
  • Undertaking a dual role:
    • Conducting specialist OT assessments to support diagnosis
    • Completing detailed holistic memory assessments to gather clinical information
  • Participating in a duty rota and supporting wider team responsibilities
  • Carrying out assessments in service users’ homes and clinic settings

You will also play a key role in:

  • Multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions contributing to diagnosis
  • Care planning and onward referrals to relevant services and agencies
  • Supporting service users and their families throughout the Memory assessment pathway.

We are seeking a candidate who:

    • Has a strong interest in working with people with cognitive impairment and dementia
    • Demonstrates a person-centred approach, placing service users at the heart of care
    • Is confident in working with service users and their families in sensitive situations
    • Has excellent communication and engagement skills
    • Possesses a sound understanding of the Occupational Therapy process, including application of the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO)
    • Has knowledge or experience of cognitive and functional assessments within a similar setting

Person Specification

Registered Occupational therapist

Essential

  • Degree in OT and HCPC registered
  • Relevant post graduate training
  • To have skills and knowledge of working with Older Adults and people with Memory difficulties

Desirable

  • Dementia care mapping, Coaching Leadership, Allens Cognitive Disability Model e.g. LACLS Tool
  • Experience of working in a multicultural community
