Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Band 5 Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic Stem Cell / Cell Therapy department. The laboratory is part of the Southwest Peninsula Transplant Service (SWPTS), spanning multiple hospital trusts, with University Hospitals Plymouth Trust (UHPT), situated in the beautiful seaside moorland city, being the central hub.

The successful candidate will play an important role in providing therapeutic services and supporting the clinical applications of stem cell transplant and cell therapy. Applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists. Our laboratory is licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and accredited by the Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT-Europe & EBMT (JACIE). This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge treatments as we are also due to start CAR T cell therapy imminently.

The post requires flexible working on an annualised hours basis to cover early/late therapeutic treatments.

Main duties of the job

Laboratory Work:

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures related to stem cell identification and enumeration, including extensive flow cytometry work as well as other laboratory techniques.
  • Work unsupervised in a GMP clean room environment for stem cell processing and storage and other cell therapy techniques.
  • Conduct quality control and assurance procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory activities, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and guidelines.

Clinical Support:

  • Collaborate with various clinical teams to provide laboratory support for patient treatment and provide support for MDT meetings where necessary.

Stem Cell Transplants and Therapies:

  • Perform stem cell transplants and other cell therapies directly on the wards, working closely with clinical staff and patients.
  • Ensure the preparation and delivery of cell therapy products are in line with clinical protocols and safety standards.
  • Engage in pro-longed patient contact during transplant procedures, ensuring compassionate and effective care.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Ability to demonstrate and apply proven comprehensive knowledge of the pathology of disease relevant to stem cell procedures.
  • Proficiency in performing all assays relevant to the section of work, demonstrating competence in handling assays of varying complexities.
  • Understanding the significance of test results to authorize and take appropriate action in response to abnormal or unusual findings.

Desirable

  • Expertise and demonstrable experience with specialist techniques in stem cell analysis, flow cytometry, cell collection, storage and transplant

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the Health Professions Council.
  • State registration with Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.

Desirable

  • A willingness to undertake study leading to qualifications required for career advancement.

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills, being able to deal with patients and staff at all levels of the organisation with tact and diplomacy.
  • Communicate with company representatives and staff from external organisations including other NHS Trusts.
  • Excellent time management.

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience of pro-longed patient contact during treatment procedures, show empathy and compassion where appropriate.
