Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Paediatric Critical Care Outreach Clinical Team The Royal London Hospital.

You will be a clinically credible nurse experienced in paediatric acute or critical care nursing, who is able to utilise clinical expertise and specialist knowledge to deliver high quality evidenced based care to the acutely unwell deteriorating ward-based patient.

A recognised children’s critical care or A&Equalification is desirable and/or significant acute emergency pathway experience, and you will need to be an APLS/EPALS provider.

You will have proven leadership and negotiation skills, and will be able to demonstrate effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team – a vital component of this role.

Main duties of the job

This role will establish and develop a dedicated paediatric tracheostomy service at the Royal London Hospital, acting as the expert clinical lead and primary point of contact for children, young people, families and the wider MDT. The post-holder will drive service development, clarify and embed care pathways, and deliver high-quality education to both clinical staff and families — ensuring safe, seamless care from diagnosis through to discharge and community follow-up.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Nursing / Physiotherapy / Speech & Language Therapy
  • NMC or HCPC Registration

Desirable

  • Evidence of Masters level education or equivalent
  • Post registration critical care / ENT course or equivalent
  • Non-medical prescribing

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of leading and implementing service improvement projects (audit, QI & research)
  • ENT or critical care experience
  • APLS / PILS and recognition of the deteriorating patient course

Desirable

  • Working with stakeholders in service delivery / improvement
  • Working across multiple sites / leading trust wide projects
  • Experience of management / supervision of staff

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of paediatric conditions and best practice guidance (tracheostomies, long-term ventilation, ENT)
  • Knowledge of legal responsibilities of the profession

Desirable

  • Knowledge of risk assessments for self, others, and services
  • Knowledge of paediatric long term ventilation pathways
