Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the regional Allergy and Immunology service at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust as a Clinical Fellow.

The service provides specialist Allergy and Immunology care across the region, including allergy clinics, diagnostic assessment, allergy challenges and desensitisation. You will join an experienced multidisciplinary team of Consultants, Specialist Doctors, Registrars and Specialist Nurses, working primarily within the outpatient service at Southmead Hospital.

This post would suit a doctor with an interest in developing their career in Allergy and Immunology. While previous experience in allergy is welcomed, we are also keen to hear from doctors who have a strong interest in the specialty and are looking to develop their knowledge and practical skills. Appropriate training and support will be provided.

You will have the opportunity to develop your experience in the assessment, diagnosis and management of allergic conditions and, following appropriate training, may also become involved in supervised inpatient allergy challenges and other day-case procedures.

The post offers an excellent opportunity to gain specialist experience within a busy and expanding regional service, while developing skills that could support a future career in Allergy and Immunology or a range of other medical specialties.

Main duties of the job

Demand for specialist Allergy services continues to grow, and Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its regional service. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the delivery and development of high-quality Allergy and Immunology care.

Based primarily at Southmead Hospital, you will work closely with Consultants, Registrars and Specialist Nurses to provide outpatient assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with allergic conditions. Clinics may also be provided at other local hospital sites as required.

Your duties will include assessing patients with suspected or confirmed allergic conditions, developing management plans, interpreting appropriate diagnostic investigations and contributing to multidisciplinary care. Following appropriate training and competency assessment, there may also be opportunities to support supervised allergy challenges and desensitisation procedures.

You will be encouraged to participate in clinical governance, audit, service improvement and departmental teaching, as well as contributing to the continued development of the regional Allergy service.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

• At ST3 level or above within the NHS or equivalent healthcare system
• Experience in managing acute allergy presentations, such as anaphylaxis, angioedema, and complex drug or food allergies
• Experience in multidisciplinary allergy clinics (e.g., skin prick testing, drug challenges, immunotherapy clinics)
• Understanding of the principles of clinical audit and ability to participate in audit cycles
• Understanding of the principles and practice of resucitation

Desirable

• Previous involvement in service improvement or quality improvement projects, ideally related to allergy pathways, patient education, or diagnostic services
• Interest in service development for allergy pathways (e.g., urgent allergy referrals, community allergy services, rapid-access clinics)
• Experience and competencies in Allergy Medicine, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of allergic conditions
• Experience in managing acute allergy presentations, such as anaphylaxis, angioedema, and complex drug or food allergies
• Experience in multidisciplinary allergy clinics (e.g., skin prick testing, drug challenges, immunotherapy clinics)

Qualifications and Training

Essential

• GMC registration and a Licence to Practise
• Completion of Foundation Training (or equivalent)

• Experience in teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff
• Ability to contribute to departmental teaching programmes and provide supervision where appropriate
• Interest in patient and family education on allergic conditions, avoidance strategies, and emergency action planning
