We are looking for a clinical psychologist who is passionate about improving the psychological well-being, human rights and quality of life of children and young people with learning disabilities; and working collaboratively with their families, carers and care systems.
The successful applicant will join a small but valued Psychology service within the Wrexham and Flintshire Community Learning Disability Teams providing a service to children aged 0-18 years presenting with mental health difficulties, psychological distress and/or behaviours of concern. You’ll be a key player in providing highly specialist assessments, formulations, interventions, and support, drawing on your expertise in mental health, trauma histories neurodevelopmental conditions, and behaviours of concern.
There are many opportunities to further develop your knowledge and skills in clinical leadership, clinical supervision, service development, consultation, teaching and training. Continuing Professional Development is actively supported and you will be encouraged to develop areas of special interest and contribute to service innovation. We have close links with the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme and regularly support a number of trainee placements.
We also welcome applications from those newly or recently qualified as this post can be offered, based upon experience, at a Band 8a or Band 7 Preceptorship arrangement.
Main duties of the job
You will work alongside clinical psychologists, assistant psychologists and trainee clinical psychologists providing psychological assessments, formulations, interventions and evidence based adapted psychological therapy as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will have opportunities to contribute to service development, audit and research, and develop your leadership, supervision and consultation skills. Regular clinical supervision will be provided by a Senior Clinical Psychologist or Consultant Clinical Psychologist. We have established links with the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme, providing regular placements and training. We also have a supportive network of child psychologists across specialisms for peer and professional support.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Essential
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist
- Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 or for those trained overseas), as accredited by the British Psychological Society.
- Good honours Degree in Psychology.
- Clinical supervision training for Doctoral Trainees.
- Doctoral level advanced knowledge of clinical psychology theory and practice, psychological therapies and their application, neuropsychological and psychometric assessment and interpretation.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including multivariate data analysis as practised within clinical psychology.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development as recommended by the BPS and HCPC.
Experience
Essential
- Substantial assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist, normally including significant post-qualification experience within the designated speciality where the post is located, or relevant transferable skills
- Demonstration of further specialist training / experience through having received extensive and demonstrable clinical supervision of working as a clinical psychologist or an alternative agreed by the Director of Psychology
- Experience of specialised psychological assessment and treatment of a range of clients across a wide range of care settings.
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care, with experience of co-ordinating care within the context of multi-disciplinary care-planning.
