Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to advertise a Colorectal Clinical Research Fellow to be based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool. The post are available from 1st November 2026 until 3rd August 2027.

The colorectal clinical research fellow post is an exciting opportunity which will enable the post holder to develop a strong foundation in clinical research leading to a MD / PhD degree.

Main duties of the job

LUHFT colorectal has a robust research program, and research fellow will have scheduled protected time allocated for research activity in research themes exploring the role of data science and AI in optimising treatment pathways for CRC and colorectal polyps.

These will be under the joint supervision of Professor Marta Garcia, Professor of Health Data Science – University of Liverpool, Dr Suhail Ahmed, lead for CMCA bowel cancer screening program – Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Mr Muhammad Ahsan Javed consultant colorectal surgeon and Senior Lecturer – University of Liverpool. The post holder should expect to gain a solid foundation in the principles of clinical research, methodology, recruitment of participants, processing of clinical specimens, and interpretation of results and will be part of wider colorectal research group led by Mr Dale Vimalachandran.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Has achieved MRCS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council and licence to practise
  • UK Foundation programme completion

Desirable

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support & Basic Surgical Skills Course

Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Foundation competency achievement or equivalent
  • Has experience of General Surgery
  • Demonstrates involvement and experience in audit

Desirable

  • Understanding of research methodology, ethics, and AI (Python).
  • Previous Colorectal Surgery experience
  • Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications
