Job summary

Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) provide care and treatment for people with serious mental health difficulties, including but not limited to psychotic illnesses, mood and personality disorders, and other disorders.

Southwark has five Community Mental Health Centres

    • Borough Community Mental Health Centre – Based at Chaucer Resource Centre, 13 Ann Moss Way, London, SE16 2TH

    • Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Community Mental Health Centre – Based at Chaucer Resource Centre, 13 Ann Moss Way, London, SE16 2TH

    • Camberwell and Walworth Community Mental Health Centre – Based At Marina House, 63-65 Denmark Hill, London, SE5 8RS

    • Peckham and Nunhead Community Mental Health Centre – Based at St Giles House, 1 St Giles Road, London, SE5 7UD

    • Dulwich Community Mental Health Centre – Based at Tessa Jowell Health Centre, 72 Dulwich Grove, London, SE22 8EY

The post holder would provide clinical leadership and medical input working with the MDT

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide clinical leadership for the multidisciplinary team. They will work with the team manager to ensure responsive, excellent and safe care is provided that supports the whole healthcare system. The postholder will work with senior directorate staff to meet Trust objectives.

Qualifications and training

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry OR within six months Approved clinician status
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of eligibility
  • Approved Clinician status AND Approved under S12 of the UK Mental Health Act (1983), or able to achieve these within 3 months of appointment
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines) Experience in other relevant specialties such as in patient, liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Membership or fellowship of Royal College of Psychiatrists

Experience and clinical skills

Essential

  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices

Desirable

  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Experience of service development

Teaching, Academic and leadership

Essential

  • Experience of teaching at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Commitment to developing user-focused services
  • Ability to get on with colleagues across disciplines and specialties
  • Ability to appraise own performance

Desirable

  • Medical education qualification
  • Approval to supervise psychiatric trainees
  • Experience of active involvement in service user initiatives
