An exciting opportunity has developed for a substantive Consultant Geriatrician appointment with a special interest in Acute Geriatrics

The successful candidate will become part of the acute geriatrics team at the University Hospital of Wales where they will support the acute take for older people and inpatients on the Older Person’s Acute Medical Unit.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will use their GIM and Geriatric Medicine skillset to help with specialty retrieval, management and ongoing care of patients. The candidate will also be supported in exploring the opportunities and challenges that frail older people uniquely manifest in this setting.

Participation in the Acute General Internal Medical On-call rota on a 1:16 basis pro-rata basis at UHW will also form the final clinical part of the overall post.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC / GDC registration with a licence to practise
  • On Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR (Combined Programme) due within 6 months of interview date
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher Diploma or Degree e.g. Masters, PhD, MD, DSc

Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working

Experience

Essential

  • General Medicine and relevant specialty experience

Desirable

  • Experience of working in an acute geriatrics setting

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation

Desirable

  • Audit / QIP work that improved clinical proactive / outcomes for patients

Research

Essential

  • Evidence of active research interests
  • Ability to critically appraise research

Desirable

  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching medical / dental students and junior doctors / dentists

Desirable

  • Organisation of (undergraduate and / or postgraduate) teaching programmes

  • Commitment to participating in and understanding of the management process
  • Evidence of effective leadership skills
