Job summary

This post is for a Consultant in Breast Surgery. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Surgeon to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview.

Interviews will take place on Monday 7th December 2026.

Main duties of the job

MWL wish to appoint a full-time Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon. The new appointee will join a team of four Consultants and one Associate Specialist working at consultant level providing a one stop service in a screening and symptomatic nationally recognised unit.

The Trust sees over 7000 referrals and continues to grow, seeing over 10,000 outpatients and we operate on over 300 cancers.

Direct Clinical Care (DCC – 7.5) will include the following:

• Outpatient Clinics (symptomatic, screening and oncoplastic)
• Operating Sessions
• Clinical Administration / Pre op and post op Ward Rounds
• MDT

There is no out of hours on call commitment with this post.

Cover for Breast patients is provided on a daily rotational basis within the Breast team and any out-of-hour post op complications are dealt with by the team as a professional obligation to the patient. We work as a team and one would be expected to cover colleagues but any extra sessions covered over the 10 PA contract could be claimed for.

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA 2.5) will include:

• Audit

• Appraisal

Research and activities serving the wider NHS is encouraged and hence we offer 2.5 SPAs which will be reviewed annually at the job planning meeting.

SPA activities will be where possible be undertaken on site.

Qualifications

Essential

• Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
• Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT on successful application
• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCP or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

• MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification

Knowledge

Essential

• Experience in Breast Oncology and Plastics
• Clinical training and experience to manage, supervise and offer expert clinical opinion on patients presenting to Rheumatology Department
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within speciality
• Fellowship and/ or advanced clinical experience in Level 2 Oncoplastic techniques

Skills

Essential

• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
• Ability to organise and manage patient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
• Ability to manage and lead a surgical team

Desirable

• Experience of supervising PRHO’s and SHO’s
• Evidence of formally supervising medical students, F1, F2, ACCS and specialist trainees
• Evidence of relevant research e.g. presentations, publications in peer reviewed journals
• Ability to teach clinical and operative skills upto SPR level
