Consultant in Critical Care Medicine
We are seeking to appoint a full-time Consultant in Critical Care Medicine based at the world-renowned Royal Brompton Hospital.
The successful applicant will work within Critical Care areas of the Royal Brompton Hospital, but there will be an opportunity for work across the Trust and the role will include outpatient clinics (e.g., ICU follow up)
The post holder will join the existing Critical Care team and will report to the cross-site director of critical care through the Royal Brompton Hospital Critical Care Leads. The post holder will also be required to support critical care services on any of the GSTT sites according to service needs.
In addition to holding full GMC registration and FRCA or equivalent, the successful candidate will be in possession of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within 6 months of possession at the time of interview. A minimum of two years of experience in cardiac/cardiothoracic critical care is essential, as is experience and accreditation in adult critical care medicine.
Main duties of the job
Applicants will participate in and contribute to the delivery of excellent Critical Care Medicine in the Level 2/3 Critical Care facilities, with an important focus on Governance, Education, Research and multispecialty/disciplinary collaboration that underpins excellence in Adult Intensive Care Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Applicants are expected to participate in the on-call rotas, including critical care, extracorporeal support (e.g. ECMO) and patient retrieval (training opportunities), to ensure the highest standards of service provision. As a national Severe Acute Respiratory Failure centre, providing VV ECMO, and a tertiary centre for complex cardiac conditions, developmental opportunities exist.

Qualifications/Training
Essential
- On the Specialist Register of the GMC or within 6 months of eligibility at the time of interview
- MRCP or FRCA or equivalent
- CCT/CCST in Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent
- MB BS or equivalent
- FFICM/EDIC or equivalent
Desirable
- Higher degree (MSc, MD, MPhil, PhD or equivalent)
- Membership of FICM
Experience
Essential
- Adult Critical Care Medicine
- Minimum of 24 months of Advanced adult Cardiac/Cardiothoracic Critical Care experience
- 12 months minimum of advanced care of patients receiving respiratory and cardiac extracorporeal support
Desirable
- Transport of critically ill patients with severe cardio-respiratory failure with and without extra-corporeal support
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Essential
- Technical and clinical skills required for Adult Critical Care Medicine
- Wide knowledge of cardiac and thoracic physiology
- Teaching skills
- Ability to initiate & supervise quality improvement projects and research
Desirable
- Training in Echocardiography (e.g. FOCUS, FEEL or FICE transthoracic/transoesophageal)

- Commitment to continuing medical education
- Experience and track record in education, training and teaching.
Desirable
- Demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement and patient safety frameworks of the organisation.
