Main duties of the job

The Penwith CMHT, with its two-consultant psychiatrist posts, covers a total population of approximately 93,000. There is a planned programme of demand and capacity mapping funded by Health Education England (CLEAR – Clinically-Led workforce Activity and Redesign) across community mental health services in Cornwall, and so these boundaries might be subject to change over the coming years.The post-holder will cover surgeries in the conurbation of Camborne and Redruth and surrounding satellite villages. Outpatient clinics are primarily held in The Basset Unit on the Longreach Hospital site.The consultant contributes to clinical leadership within the team but is only medically responsible for individuals that he/she has contact with but is not expected to care co-ordinate.The post is supported by a 1.0 WTE Specialty Doctor and 1.00 WTE Resident Doctor who works between the team consultants. Trainees are primarily community-based but will also have on-call duty commitments to the inpatient services. The consultant will share Clinical Supervisor duties for the trainee

Person Specification

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

  • CCT or equivalent in GA Psychiatry
  • Experience of managing a caseload of community patients with a range of mental health problems

Desirable

  • Experience of working across different services within mental health
  • Section 12 and AC Approval
  • Qualifications or experience in managing physical illness
  • Other relevant qualifications/experience (e.g. specific psychological therapies)

Skills, Knowledge, and Aptitude

Essential

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to engage with clients experiencing a wide range of mental health problems
  • Previous experience in taking a leadership role in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Knowledge and experience of risk management

Desirable

  • Specific achievements which demonstrate clinical leadership
  • Evidence of involvement in partnership with other agencies

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching experience at post-graduate and/or under-graduate level

Desirable

  • Specific evidence of organising teaching or medical education programmes
  • Relevant teaching qualification

Reseach and Audit

Essential

  • Experience of carrying out an audit project

Desirable

  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication
