Job summary

A new opportunity has risen to join our friendly team for the post of Consultant in Gastroenterology. This post will be based in West Suffolk Hospital which covers a 33 bedded ward. The post involves in-patient duties, outpatients duties (depending on the specialty interest), and regular commitment to both in-reach into the medical admissions unit and on-call for general medicine.

The West Suffolk Gastroenterology team is currently looking for a consultant in General Medicine on a permanent basis to enhance the current service, as we look forward towards the new hospital build. The applicant would be looking after medical patients on up to 50% of the Gastro ward, which is currently shared by nine Gastro consultants. The consultants are currently rotating on and off the ward on a weekly basis. This provides opportunity for the applicant to have dedicated time to develop their sub-speciality interest, mainly in the afternoons/evenings.

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Special Training

Essential

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register in General (Internal) Medicine or be eligible for entry (within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training) at the time of interview

Desirable

  • MD or PhD

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Depth and breadth of experience in acute ward based and out-patient medicine
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: – ? PLAB 1 ? PLAB 2 If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.

Desirable

  • Sub-specialty focus on Liver Disease
  • Clinical interest in Nutrition
  • Specialist ERCP interest

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Medicine
  • Experience in management of acute medical inpatients and medical outpatients
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Experience in management of General Medicine in-patient and out-patient medicine

Desirable

  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR training programme or equivalent

Teaching and Training

Essential

  • Experience of supervising FY1s, FY2s StRs and SpRs
  • Ability to teach clinical skills

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
  • Experience of teaching other professional groups
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research

Management & Audit Training

Essential

  • Ability to organise and manage day to day service delivery e.g. out-patient priorities
  • Ability to manage and lead strategic developments in service delivery
  • Experience of audit management
