Consultant in General Surgery with an interest in Upper GI Surgery

PLEASE NOTE WE ARE SEEKING 2 SUBSTANTIVE UGI CONSULTANTS @ UHL.

We are seeking to recruit x2 enthusiastic, progressive consultants to join our general surgery department. The post will include managing elective and emergency general surgery. There are distinct training and supervisory roles to mentor medical students as well as trainees.

The appointees must possess advanced laparoscopic skills. An understanding of streamlining of care and continued adherence with best-practice guidelines is also essential. Upper GI Surgical training and endoscopy experience are also essential.The appointees should be a fully trained general and benign upper GI surgeon.

Main duties of the job

This post will improve the quality and long term sustainability of the care of our general surgery patients in line with both the Trust’s and Commissioners’ intentions. The post holder will lead transformational change and help develop further an innovative, modern surgical service as well as provide teaching to undergraduate & postgraduate trainees, in liaison with the other Consultant members of the Department.

The job plan will consist of ten programmed activities (10 PAs), including 1.5 SPAs and emergency work. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in an internal arrangement to provide cross-cover during absences.

The Department holds regular audit, clinical and business meetings. All consultants and junior staff are expected to attend unless prior notice is given.

These fixed commitments within the timetable may be subject to change depending on the needs of the department. The post-holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in frequency and arrangement of outpatient and theatre sessions.

Qualifications

Essential

• oFull GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
• oMB BS or equivalent
• oFRCS (Gen Surg) or equivalent
• oOn the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining this

Desirable

• PhD / MS / MD / MSc

Clinical Experience

Essential

• oWide experience of emergency general surgery with evidence of practice within 6 months of appointment
• oGood experience of elective and emergency upper and lower GI surgery with evidence of practice within 6 months of appointment
• oKnowledge of UK hospital systems
• oUpper GI subspeciality experience and training
• oProficiency in diagnostic Upper GI Endoscopy (JAG accreditation)

Desirable

• oUpper GI subspecialty experience and training
• oExperience in establishing and improving patient pathways to improve patient outcomes

Clinical Audit

Essential

• oExperience of clinical audit
• oDemonstrable understanding and acceptance of the principles of Clinical Governance
