Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in fertility to join our team, based at Yeovil District Hospital.
This is a substantive 10 PA post combining a general Obstetrics and Gynaecology role at Yeovil with a cross-county fertility remit. The successful candidate will provide fertility clinics across both Yeovil District Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital, working closely with our Fertility Nurse Specialist and endometriosis team to support a joined-up fertility service across Somerset.
The role will include assessment and management of subfertility, fertility ultrasound and follicular tracking, ovulation induction and monitoring, appropriate investigation of tubal and uterine factors, and counselling and onward referral for assisted conception where required. The post holder will also contribute to the development, governance and quality improvement of fertility services across the county.
Alongside this specialist work, you will contribute to general obstetric and gynaecological care at Yeovil, including outpatient, theatre and emergency activity, and participate in the consultant 1:8 on-call rota.

Main duties of the job
*Provide high quality obstetric and gynaecological care across inpatient, outpatient and emergency settings within Yeovil Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital.
*Participate in the 1:8 Obstetric & Gynaecology on-call rota, including twice daily consultant led ward rounds on Labour Ward at Yeovil Hospital.
*Lead and support general gynaecology clinics, antenatal clinics, day surgery and elective caesarean lists.
*Contribute to the departmental teaching, supervision and appraisal of resident doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
*Engage actively in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development.
*Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Yeovil Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital to support safe, effective and patient-centred care.
*Work with service managers and clinical colleagues to manage their caseload flexibly and ensure that clinical, national and local priorities including referral to treatment waiting time standards are achieved.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- *Medical Degree and Royal College membership or equivalent
- *Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice.
- *Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of interview. Candidates applying via the Portfolio Pathway must already be on the Specialist Register.
- *Relevant CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of interview).
- *Completed advanced training in the management of subfertility / reproductive medicine (ATSM / SITM or equivalent).
Desirable
- *An appropriate higher degree of qualification (MD, PHD or equivalent).
- *MSC or equivalent higher qualification.
- *Educational supervision qualification.
Experience
Essential
- *Depth and breadth of clinical experience in the assessment and management of subfertility.
- *Experience and management of both female and male factors infertility.
- *Competence in gynaecological ultrasound relevant to fertility practice, including transvaginal ultrasound and follicular assessment.
- *Experience in the investigations and management of ovulatory dysfunction, including ovulation induction and monitoring.
- *Experience in elective and emergency general obstetrics.
- *Experience in the management of general gynaecology, including outpatient and day-case activity.
- *Competent to work without direct supervision, including providing non-resident on-call.
- *Willingness and ability to fulfil the key elements of the job description.

Desirable
- *Experience in a fertility / reproductive medicine service.
- *Experience of HyCoSy and / or saline infusion sonohysterography.
- *Experience in developing or improving a fertility clinical service or pathway.
- *Experience of clinical leadership within fertility / reproductive medicine.
- *Experience of working with tertiary assisted conception services and associated referral pathways.
- *Experience of managing fertility issues associated with endometriosis and working within a multidisciplinary endometriosis service.
