Job summary

A whole-time post as consultant in paediatric urology with on-call paediatric surgery and urology commitments, is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a substantive Consultant post.

Main duties of the job

Clinical; The post-holder will contribute to the provision of tertiary level paediatric urology care and in the acute general and neonatal surgery as part of the acute rota (1:7.5). The post-holder will work closely with other members of the paediatric surgery and urology teams, including clinical nurse specialists, in the delivery of high-level care for children and families from the region and beyond. The post holder will also have clinical support from clinical team members (trainees, trust doctors and foundation doctors) in delivering this care. The post-holder will need to travel to different sites e.g. Horton General Hospital, Chipping Norton, Northampton General Hospital, and within our ODN for theatre sessions and clinics. These are existing clinics and lists, as well as others in development. Appropriate travel time will be permitted to reach these sites.Teaching/Research Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full UK GMC Registration with License to Practice
  • FRCS (Paed.Surg.) or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Paediatric Surgery or proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview

Desirable

  • Higher medical degree (DM, DPhil, PhD)
  • Specialist qualification in paediatric urology

Professional Training

Essential

  • 2 years dedicated paediatric urological experience
  • Research publication in paediatric surgery and/or urology
  • Evidence of trauma experience or training (e.g. DSTS)

Desirable

  • Two-year national subspecialty training in Paediatric Urology or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Paediatric Surgery
  • Advanced paediatric laparoscopic surgical skills
  • Competence in acute general paediatric surgery

Desirable

  • Experience of transitional care implementation in adolescent urology/adult urology interface

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of a multi-professional team.
  • Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
  • Able to change and adapt, respond to changing circumstances and to cope effectively with setbacks or pressure
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.

  • Evidence of contribution to service development
  • Management training or qualification.

  • Evidence of role in development of clinical guidelines and care pathways in paediatric surgery/urology
