SUBSTANTIVE CONSULTANT IN PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF NORTH MIDLANDS NHS TRUST

Applications are invited for the above post working in the University Hospitals of North Midlands. This is an exciting opportunity to join the established consultant and multidisciplinary teamto provide Specialist Palliative care services to the populations of Staffordshire and Cheshire. This is a 10 PA post which includes an on-call commitment attracting category B availability supplement. Applications would be considered for less than full time working or job share.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an existing dynamic team of 4 consultants working in the Staffordshire area to expand the Specialist Palliative Care services provided in the University Hospitals of North Midlands. The successful candidate will be a core member of the Hospital Palliative Care Team working in both hospital sites providing specialist palliative advice, outpatient services and inpatient care for our 10 palliative medicine beds. The successful candidate will also work closely with local hospices and community services. The successful candidate will act take a lead role in undergraduate Palliative Care education at the Keele University’s School of Medicine and will contribute to the development and provision of the Palliative Care curriculum.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC Possession of MRCP.
  • Entry on Specialist Register or in U.K. training scheme or within 6 months of award of CCT at time of interview or CESR application in progress through Portfolio Pathway for Specialist Registration.

Desirable

  • A higher degree (eg MSc in Palliative Medicine)

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Good general clinical experience in the specialty
  • Experience of liaising and co-ordinating care between multiple clinical teams
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within all areas of palliative medicine.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit.

Professional and Multidisciplinary Team Working

  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues and within a team
  • Ability to work flexibly and accommodate changes in work plan when necessary for the smooth running of the department.

Desirable

  • Experience of service development

Academic Achievements, Research, Publications

Essential

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
  • An awareness of current speciality specific developments, initiatives and issues
  • Evidence of training in research methodology

  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
  • Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives

Teaching and Training Experience

Essential

  • Enthusiasm and ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff and students, and staff of other disciplines.
  • Substantial experience of teaching medical students

  • Recognised teaching skills course/ medical education qualification
  • Experience of leadership, curriculum development and assessment in medical education.
