As a Respiratory Consultant, you will

Work with the existing team to provide a 7-day service (including On Calls)

Provide expert clinical care for inpatients and outpatients (diagnosis, treatment and aftercare)

Lead/develop specialist respiratory services

Collaborate with a team of consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals.

Contribute to teaching, training, and research initiatives within the department

Be an independent practitioner for EBUS Diagnostic Procedures (it’d be desirable to also deliver Bronchoscopy and/or Thoracoscopy procedures

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Provide acute/elective care for Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine patients, including an in-reach service, triage referrals and respond to Advice & Guidance requests

Participate in Ward/Board Rounds daily

Improve the flow of patients at MKUH

Support with service developments/improvements to allow the service to continue to meet the needs of the growing local population.

Support and ensure Governance within the service to ensure patient safety is maintained and incidents are raised early and investigated properly.

Build strong working relationships with fellow colleagues, operations managers, patient pathway coordinators and other teams across the Trust.

Uphold the MKUH values; Care, Communicate, Collaborate and Contribute.

Maintain a high standard of work and look to continuously improve their practice to ensure patient safety and experience.

Support the training, professional supervision and management of trainee medical staff/students

Person Specification

Professional qualifications

Essential

  • Medical Degree (MRCP UK) or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration and Specialist Registration

Desirable

  • Higher medical degree (MD/PhD)
  • Accreditation in General (Internal) Medicine and Respiratory Care.

Professional training

Essential

  • Significant post-graduate experience, including higher medical training.
  • Significant experience as a Specialist Registrar or Senior Registrar (or equivalent experience in a post of responsibility / training potential)
  • Skilled in EBUS Pleural Procedures

Desirable

  • Specialist interest in Medical Education
  • Research background
  • Experience in leading Virtual Ward activities
  • Skilled in Bronchoscopy and Pleural Procedures

Clinical knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Broad experience in all aspects of Respiratory and General (Internal) medicine, Cancer 2WW and Sleep Medicine
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need

Desirable

  • IT skills
  • Breadth of experience within and outside speciality

Teaching and training skills

Essential

  • Evidence of contributions to teaching and training of undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Evidence of ability to motivate and develop both medical and non-medical staff.
  • Willingness and ability to contribute to departmental and Trust teaching programmes.

Desirable

  • Education/ teaching qualification
  • Experience in formal educational roles

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of ability to communicate with patients and colleagues. Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.

  • Evidence of ability to lead clinical teams at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.

  • Ability to work in a team, balancing individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole

Circumstance

Essential

  • Required to maintain full registration with the General Medical Council as well as remaining on the Specialist Registrar.
  • If applying with CESR, must be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of application
  • Evidence of regular and up-to-date appraisal.

Transport

Essential

  • Must be able, when On Call, to return to the Hospital site if required, within 30mins

Desirable

  • Car driver with own transport

  • Ability to work independently and as part of the Medical Directorate
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and the Trust as a whole
