Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a substantive post as a Restorative Dentistry Consultant based in the Periodontal Department at Birmingham Dental Hospital.

This post is full time (10 sessions) and will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of service governing the appointment of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff in England and Wales, or as subsequently varied by agreement. The appointment will be under the employment of the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be involved in new patient consultant led diagnostic and treatment planning clinics. They will also manage a number of level 3 specialist periodontal and implant failure cases that are currently under treatment at the Dental Hospital.

The post holder will be responsible to Paul Weston, Consultant in Periodontology, who has managerial responsibility for the periodontal service.

The post holder will be expected to give advice and assistance to members of the junior dental staff in training and Specialty Dentists within the Department as the need arises.

The post holder will be expected to contribute 1 DCC session to undergraduate teaching as directed by the BDS programme lead.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training

Essential

  • Fully registered with General Dental Council (GDC).
  • The post holder should have completed at least five years’ full-time postgraduate specialty training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis) with periodontal care being a major component of that training programme; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Inclusion in GDC Specialist List for Restorative Dentistry.

Desirable

  • Inclusion in GDC Specialist List for Periodontology.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery, MFDS or equivalent.
  • MClinDent or MSc in Periodontology.

Experience / Skills

Essential

  • Experience of teaching undergraduate students clinically.
  • Experience of Postgraduate teaching and assessment.

Desirable

  • Dental Teaching Hospital post.
  • Clinical Audit experience.
  • Experience of clinical research.
  • Postgraduate research qualification.

Special Aptitude / Activities

Essential

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

  • Previous publications in high impact journals e.g. J Clin Periodontology.
  • Formal presentation of papers or research.
  • Experience of writing systematic reviews.

  • Good patient management and inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to work in team situation.

  • Satisfactory DBS.
