An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Step 4 Psychotherapy Service as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy, specialising in Cognitive Behaviour Psychotherapy (CBT). This post supports the expansion of psychotherapy capacity to meet growing demand and improve patient outcomes.

Location: St Ann’s House & Nottingham Psychotherapy Unit

Your Role:

  • Deliver CBT assessments and treatment for complex cases
  • Run a medication clinic for CBT patients referred from primary care
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists and LMHT clinicians to enhance care pathways
  • Supervise Higher and Core trainees in CBT
  • Participate in referral meetings, case discussions, and business planning
  • Engage in CPD and academic programmes

DBS Notice: Applicants pay DBS costs (£26.40 standard / £54.40 enhanced), deducted from salary over two months. Annual DBS Update Service fee is £16.

Main duties of the job

Provide high-quality, evidence-based senior medical care in acute and locked rehabilitation settings. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver person-centred care and foster collaborative therapeutic relationships with patients and carers. Manage, appraise, and supervise junior medical staff in line with Trust policies, ensuring compliance with the Working Time Directive and Modernising Medical Careers framework. Undertake administrative duties, accurately record clinical activity, and submit data promptly. Participate in service and business planning, annual consultant appraisal, and internal CPD programmes. Maintain GMC registration, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval (if relevant), and adhere to professional codes of conduct. Engage in annual job plan reviews to reflect service changes. Collaborate with managers and colleagues to ensure efficient service delivery and contribute to financial planning. Comply with Trust policies, procedures, and governance standards while supporting the Medical Director and management teams.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • External qualification registered with BPC or UKCP as CBT therapist with BACP /other equivalent for CAT

Eligibility

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

Transport

Essential

  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative

Essential

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others

Desirable

  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service

ACADEMIC SKILLS & LIFELONG LEARNING

  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
