We are pleased to offer a consultant post in Paediatrics and Neonatology, with a special interest in Paediatric Cardiology. This is an exciting opportunity to join a team which is dedicated to providing excellent clinical care to the children and young people of West Cheshire and the surrounding area, including parts of North Wales.

The post is offered as full-time appointment, although candidates wishing to work less than full-time would be welcome to apply. The candidates will integrate into the team of existing consultants to provide a comprehensive Paediatric Cardiology service including outpatient and inpatient care for general paediatrics and our neonatal unit and Cardiology clinics as well as providing out-of-hours cover on a 1 in 10 rota.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the lead Paediatrician for Paediatric Cardiology to improve the service provision for children with congenital heart disease within the district.

The post holder will provide with the multi-disciplinary team an evidence-based, holistic service for children and families with congenital and acquired heart disease. There is tertiary support for this service at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Local diagnostic support services include facilities for ECG, 24hr tape, 24hr BP, exercise testing. Fixed sessions will include weekly echocardiography outpatient clinic, a monthly local Joint Paediatric Cardiology clinic with a visiting Paediatric Cardiologist and monthly attendance at the JCC meeting at the Tertiary Centre or on Teams. In addition, the PEC will provide in ad-hoc patient cardiac assessments including urgent echocardiograms and advice on the Children’s ward and Neonatal unit. The post holder is expected to develop close working relationships and have an honorary contract with the Tertiary Centre and represent the Trust in the North West CHD Network.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS, MRCPCH (or equivalent)
  • Ability to perform echocardiography
  • Appropriate competencies and skills in Paediatric Cardiology – minimum of 1 year in an accredited training post or equivalence, ideally paediatric cardiology SPIN

Desirable

  • The EACVI/AEPC Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Echo Certification or working towards this.
  • APLS/NLS instructor (or similar course) Formal educational qualifications
  • Research experience in subspecialty interest

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • The applicant must produce evidence that they are on the UK Specialist Register in Paediatrics (or within six months of specialist registration date and are expected to achieve specialist registration)
  • Experience /Interest in teaching
  • Relevant experience in undertaking and organisation of Audit

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in clinical management
