A rare opportunity has arisen to join one of the UK’s leading diagnostic pathology services. North West London Pathology (NWLP) is one of the UK’s largest laboratory providers, delivering high-quality diagnostics across a diverse patient population. Our UKAS-accredited (ISO 15189:2022) Cellular Pathology service operates a hub-and-spoke model, with Histopathology, Cytology and Electron Microscopy based at Charing Cross Hospital, and the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) at Hammersmith Hospital.

We are seeking an ambitious Consultant to join our highly regarded SIHMDS team in a substantive 10 PA post. Working with expert pathology and clinical haematology colleagues, you will diagnose a wide range of complex haematological disorders including malignancies, myelodysplastic syndromes, bone marrow failure disorders, pancytopenias and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria.

This Monday to Friday post has no on-call commitment, offering an excellent work-life balance. Consultants attend MDTs remotely and contribute to integrated, patient-centred care across the region. You will report samples from the Trust’s internationally recognised MPN/CML service, gaining exposure to complex cases. Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS), working closely with consultant colleagues and the clinical haematology team at Hammersmith Hospital. You will provide a high quality diagnostic service, undertaking specialist investigations and delivering accurate, timely reports in line with national guidance. You will also represent SIHMDS at local and regional cancer MDTs, contribute to service development and innovation, and provide support to the wider Cellular Pathology service where required.

Working within a UKAS accredited service you will play an active role in quality assurance, the Quality Management System, and continuous service improvement, including supporting investigations into adverse incidents and maintaining the highest professional standards. Occasional travel to other sites for MDTs may be occasionally required and consultant cross-cover during annual and study leave will be expected.

The successful applicant will divide their time between clinical work (DCCs) and activities that underpin direct clinical care (SPA) – This may include participation in training, medical education, continuing professional development, formal teaching, audit, job planning, appraisal, research, and local clinical governance activities.

Person Specification

Education/ qualifications

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential

  • Ability to undertake independent and full clinical responsibility.
  • Ability to advise on efficient delivery and operation of service.
  • IT, digital technology skills and computer literacy
  • Wide experience in all aspects of haemato-oncology diagnostics
  • Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes within Genomic medicine and SIHMDS

Leadership/ Management skills

  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.

Teaching/ Training

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / postgraduates and junior medical staff

  • Thorough understanding of principles of clinical audit
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit projects

  • Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Language

Essential

  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
