An exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and motivated individual has arisen at the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust to join the Acute Medicine Department as a Consultant Physician.

The successful applicant will join the Acute Medicine service comprising the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Hospital at Home (George Eliot @ Home) Service.

Acute Medicine is being reconfigured with the aim of offering 7 day service in order that our patients are provided with high quality clinical care at the front door and beyond, in partnership with our Accident and Emergency Department team.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide consultant leadership and senior clinical decision-making across the Acute Medicine Service.
  • Deliver consultant-led ward rounds, multidisciplinary board rounds and timely review of patients within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and Hospital at Home (George Eliot @ Home).
  • Support the development of SDEC, Hospital at Home, and ambulatory pathways to improve patient outcomes and reduce unnecessary admissions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Emergency Department, Frailty Assessment Unit, Ambulatory Care Unit, Gastro Day Unit, specialty teams and community services to deliver integrated patient care.
  • Participate in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota and the Acute Medicine weekend rota.
  • Lead and contribute to service improvement, quality improvement, clinical governance and audit activities.
  • Supervise, teach and support resident doctors and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Play an active role in shaping the future development of Acute Medicine and innovative models of urgent and emergency care at George Eliot Hospital.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • CCT/CESR in Acute Internal Medicine
  • On GMC Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview date

Training

Essential

  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and commitment to revalidation

Desirable

  • Educational or leadership qualification

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in acute and general internal medicine
  • Competent in the assessment and management of acutely unwell adult medical patients
  • Experience of consultant-led ward rounds and multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience in performing clinical procedures relevant to acute medicine

Desirable

  • Experience of Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
  • Experience of Virtual Ward and/or Hospital at Home

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of clinical governance, patient safety, and quality improvement
  • Excellent communication, liaison, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to lead and manage a clinical team, motivating, supporting, and developing staff across professional groups
  • Ability to advise on efficient and effective delivery of acute medicine services
  • Understanding of NHS management principles and the operational delivery of acute services
  • Good organisational, prioritisation, and time management skills

Desirable

  • Experience in service redesign or pathway development
  • Experience in rota management, workforce planning, or operational leadership

Teaching & Education

Essential

  • Ability to deliver high-quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate learners
  • Experience of supervising, mentoring, and supporting resident doctors and other healthcare professionals
  • Commitment to continuing medical education

Desirable

  • Educational Supervisor or Clinical Supervisor experience

Audit, Quality Improvement (QI), and Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and/or quality improvement, including completion of the audit cycle
  • Commitment to improving quality and patient safety
  • Ability to critically appraise evidence and research and apply best practice to clinical care
  • Evidence of implementing changes to clinical practice resulting from audit or QI work
