Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Mental Health Inpatient Services

Job summary

We are seeking to appoint to an Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist post within Adult Mental Health Services, based in Rotherham.

The team in Rotherham is keen to welcome applications from dynamic psychiatrists with a progressive approach to MDT working, to provide senior medical input to patient care for adults of working age in our Acute Care Pathway.

Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register for Adult Psychiatry or a trainee within 6 months of completing their CCT and be approved/eligible for approval for Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status. They should have evidence of good communication skills and a commitment to multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working. The job plan relates to a whole-time appointment with an opportunity to modify this if the post is offered as part-time or job share.

The successful applicant will be one of two full time consultants providing day to day medical support to the two Rotherham Acute Inpatient Wards. There is also a less than full time consultant who works on the PICU based in the same unit. The post will be based at Swallownest Court. Swallownest Court is in Rotherham with easy access to the M1 motorway and 20 minutes commute from Sheffield.

Main duties of the job

The Inpatient Unit consists of 2 acute wards each with 18 beds. There is also a modern and very spacious PICU with 5 beds. The acute wards are covered by 2 full-time Consultant psychiatrists (one being this post) as well as a part time PICU Consultant. They are supported by 5 junior doctors (comprising of 1 FY1, 1 FY2, 2 CT’s, 1 HT and 1 Specialty doctor across the three wards. On each ward other staff include Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Occupational Therapists (OT), OT Assistant, Clinical Psychologists, Ward Manager and Deputy Ward Manger. The post holder will be a leading member of the well-established in-patient multidisciplinary team.

On average, there are 20 admissions and discharges per month. The average length of stay on the ward is 4 weeks. The patients are admitted through the Crisis Team which acts as the gatekeeper for inpatient beds. Another route of admission is through Section 136 assessments to which the Home Treatment Team routinely provide input with the view to offering alternative support to the patients other than admission if deemed appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC and license to practice
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Adult Psychiatry or a trainee within six months of completing their CCT.

Desirable

  • MRC Psych or equivalent higher qualification.
  • Higher Specialist Training in Adult Psychiatry (e.g. SpR scheme)
  • MD, Management qualification, other professional qualification (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT)

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience within General Adult Psychiatry.
  • Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of settings.
  • Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance.

Desirable

  • Prior experience working as a Consultant in Adult Psychiatry.
  • Evidence of development of special interest Proven commitment to improving the quality of clinical care.
  • Other special interest/expertise relevant to the post.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical supervision experience/skills. The aptitude and potential to develop a leadership role within the service with special emphasis on leading on quality and clinical standards and engaging in service improvement.
  • Approved or eligible for approval under Section 12(2) of MHA 1983.
  • Approved or eligible for Approved Clinician Status.
  • To fulfil commitments and respond to emergencies in an appropriate and timely manner.

Desirable

  • Ability to undertake training/mentoring of medical staff in junior grades and enthusiasm for education.

Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of research processes.
  • Committed to Continuing Professional Development.
