Job summary

The Consultant Radiographer is a senior clinical and leadership role responsible for leading and developing the plain film reporting service within Radiology. The postholder provides expert image interpretation and reporting across the appendicular and axial skeleton, chest and abdomen, while ensuring reports are delivered to a high standard and within agreed timeframes. The role also provides professional leadership, governance oversight, service improvement, training, research, and audit activities to support excellence in patient care.

The successful candidate will have extensive expertise in plain film reporting and image interpretation. They will demonstrate strong clinical leadership and a commitment to quality, governance, and continuous professional development. The role requires the ability to manage services and teams effectively, support and mentor colleagues, lead training programmes, and contribute to research and service innovation.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Radiographer will provide clinical leadership, mentorship, and expert support to Reporting Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners, and trainees. Acting as a specialist resource, they will advise on complex cases, promote best practice, and support the ongoing development of reporting skills across the team.

The postholder will lead the design, coordination, and delivery of training programmes in advanced practice and plain film reporting, while supervising and assessing undergraduate and postgraduate learners, trainee Advanced Practitioners, and Radiology Registrars. They will play a key role in developing the future workforce and maintaining high standards of clinical practice.

The successful candidate will also contribute to research, clinical audit, and quality improvement activities, using evidence-based practice to evaluate outcomes, improve service delivery, enhance patient pathways, and support continuous improvement within the Radiology service.
