Job summary
The successful applicant will be a General Radiologist with an interest in paediatric radiology. The split between general and paediatric imaging work will be flexible to address any potential candidate’s experience and career aspirations.
If a newly appointed consultant, the successful applicant will be eligible to apply for additional study leave to undertake up to three months additional subspecialty radiology training to meet specific learning objectives that are of benefit to the applicant and the Clinical Imaging Directorate at RCHT. This additional study leave must be taken within years of appointment. There may be a requirement to participate the on call rota during this period of additional study leave.
The successful candidate will join a team of 33 Consultants providing a wide range of general and specialist radiology services and will be expected to contribute to the second on 1:11 general radiology on call service.
The Royal Cornwall Hospital offers general paediatric imaging services including fluoroscopy, ultrasound, plain film, nuclear medicine, MRI (including a well-established GA service), CT as well as some interventional radiology and PET-CT in older teenagers. A large proportion of the subspecialist work is carried out at the main hospital site (Treliske) with additional ultrasound lists currently at Bodmin and Camborne &Redruth Hospital along with plain film at all sites.
Main duties of the job
RCHT is a large training centre for the Peninsula Postgraduate School of Radiology. A number of Specialty Registrars rotate through the department at any one time (20 in 2026-7).
Radiology services are based at The Royal Cornwall Hospital. The department however will support Consultants working general radiology sessions at community sites if appropriate. Home workstations are available for consultant radiologists to facilitate more flexible working. For most consultants on a standard full time contract job plans include one day a week for flexible SPA/off work (subject to job planning).
- Provision with Consultant Colleagues of appropriate Subspecialty Radiology services to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
- The provision of general elective and emergency radiology services to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Support and ensure the efficient functioning of the Clinical Imaging department and service
- Out-of-hours responsibilities, including weekend working and participation in the Consultant on-call rota.
- Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
- Contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
- Participation in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.
- Managerial responsibilities where appropriate.
- To comply with the IR(ME)R 2000.

Qualifications
Essential
- oEntry on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT at interview)
- oFRCR qualification
Desirable
- oWide medical or surgical experience
- oPost graduate medical qualification
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Extensive clinical training and experience in appropriate subspecialty radiology.
- Completed (or within 6 months of completing) the RCR appropriate subspecialty curriculum (or equivalent).
- Subspecialty training in Paediatric Imaging.
- Ability to contribute to the general departmental work load.
- Emergency and general Radiology competence.
Desirable
- oPost CCT subspecialty training in subspecialty radiology
Management and Administrative Experience
Essential
- oExperience of audit.
- oAbility and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets.
Desirable
- oAttendance at management course.
Teaching Experience

- oAbility to teach clinical skills and the radiology curriculum to radiology registrars.
