We are looking for a Data Architect to join our Digital, Data &Technology Directorate. It’s the perfect opportunity to take the next step in your career whilst supporting the NHS.

If you are excellent at problem solving, great at building relationships and have outstanding technical data architecture skills, you have what this role needs! You will join the Data Strategy & Governance team, as part of a newly developed data architecture function. You will work in partnership with stakeholders, analysing how data is modelled and collected, understanding gaps, and making recommendations forimprovements. You will help design, develop, and implement data principles and standards across the organisation. You will need to be enthusiastic, a logical thinker and have a drive to succeed!

Main duties of the job

  • Undertaking a review of NHSBSA’s critical data assets, cataloguing data items and their sources. Working closely with the product teams to define their data requirements based on the data architecture standard.
  • Build and manage the repository of NHSBSA’s data assets and help define/manage/maintain data standards for NHSBSA
  • Develop robust data models to meet customer needs creating technical design documentation that reflects data standards
  • Continually researching emerging technologies and best practices to ensure standards are maintained
  • Understands a variety of metadata management tools and can design/maintain the appropriate metadata repositories to enable the NHSBSA to understand their data assets
  • Collaborate with partners across functions to ensure solutions adhere to architectural principles, best practice, and meet the desired outcomes of the customers
  • Providing SME input to the development and evolution of the NHSBSA data architecture standards, policies, and practices
  • Evaluating technical proposals from external suppliers, making implementation recommendations to senior stakeholders
  • Explaining the concepts and principles of data modelling; producing, maintaining, and updating relevant data models for specific business needs
  • Contribute to and prepare proposals for change including producing necessary estimates, mandates, and business cases within the relevant departments.

Personal Qualities, Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Data modelling – Understand the concepts and principles of data modelling and able to produce relevant data models. Reverse engineer data models from a live system.
  • Ability to identify the conformity of data across different systems
  • Data Analysis & Synthesis – Undertakes data profiling and source system analysis and can present clear insights to colleagues to support the end use of the data
  • Data Governance – Knows how to assure and integrate data services to meet the needs of multiple business services. Works proactively to ensure the organisation designs architecture that considers data.
  • Turning business problems into data design – working with business and technology stakeholders to translate business problems into data designs, through iterative processes and alignment of user needs with organisational objectives
  • Ability to break down complex problems and projects into manageable goals
  • Ability to get to the heart of a problem and make sound and timely decisions to resolve it
  • Ability to develop people, skills in coaching, mentoring, and teaching on the job

Experience

Essential

  • Proven work experience in data architecture and data modelling.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices for database development and administration of relational and multi-dimensional database design
  • Knowledge and experience of working with large datasets in relational database systems such as Microsoft SQL Server, PL SQL, PostGres etc.
  • Experience of eliciting and documenting user requirements from a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience of working with or advising on the development of coherent and consistent terminology, definitions, dictionaries, or business glossaries.
  • Expert level knowledge of industry best practices for database development and administration of relational and multi-dimensional database design

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of business intelligence and reporting tools for data visualisation
  • Knowledge and experience of advising on links between relational/transactional and dimensional/reporting databases such as Data Warehousing, Extract Transform and Load processes, and reporting systems
  • Knowledge and experience of open-source big data tools
  • Recent experience of integrating large, complex datasets
  • Experience of working with standard terminologies such as SNOMED CT or the NHS Data Model and Dictionary
  • An understanding of data linkage methodologies and technologies
  • Experience of analysing and validating requirements through the lifecycle of a project or an on-going service
  • An understanding of GDPR
  • Experience of Data Governance & Data Quality tooling

Qualifications

Essential

  • An IT related degree or equivalent, plus significant demonstrable experience in two of the following: Data Architecture (digital and service) , System Design, Business and Technical Analysis, Data Profiling and/or Data Modelling

Desirable

  • Knowledge of GDS principles
  • Experience of working in an agile environment
  • TOGAF Certification or equivalent
