Job summary
Provision of specialist technical services within the Orthodontic and Oral Surgery departments, working collaboratively with clinical and laboratory colleagues to support the delivery of high-quality patient care.
The post holder will be responsible for the construction and production of primary removable orthodontic appliances, study models and working models for appliance construction, examination, teaching and diagnostic treatment planning. The role will also include the use of digital technologies, including intraoral and laboratory scanning, digital model manipulation and archiving, CAD/CAM workflows and 3D printing of orthodontic and other appropriate dental appliances and models.
The post holder will contribute to the development and implementation of digital laboratory processes, supporting the continued modernisation and improvement of technical services within Orthodontics and Oral Surgery.
The post holder will be expected to develop and maintain technical skills in line with experience, current practice, new technologies, professional qualifications and service requirements. They will demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development and will contribute to the ongoing development of an efficient, responsive and high-quality digital dental laboratory service.
Main duties of the job
Construction of range of primary removable appliances and development in the production of complex appliances required for all the specialised clinics listed above.
Construction of study models and working models, mouth guards, bite raising appliances, repairs, relines and additions.
The role will also include the use of digital technologies, including intraoral and laboratory scanning, digital model manipulation and archiving, CAD/CAM workflows and 3D printing of orthodontic and other appropriate dental appliances and models.
Ensure that all equipment, whether issued personally or for communal use, is used in the correct and safe manner and faults are reported immediately to supervisor/line manager.

Qualifications
Essential
- BSc in Dental Technology or equivalent.
- GDC Registration
Desirable
- Msc Dental Technology (Orthodontics).
Experience
Essential
- Working with supervision to tight work schedules and timeframes
- Producing work of a consistently high quality.
- Constructing primary removable orthodontic appliances, study models / working models for appliance construction, examination, teaching aids, diagnostic treatment planning, and scan models for archiving and manipulation.
Desirable
- Scanning models for archiving and manipulation.
- Experience in Orthodontics.
- Working in a hospital environment.
- Producing work of a consistently high quality.
Knowledge
Essential
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of a range of dental / orthodontic procedures.
- Oral and facial anatomy.
- Tooth eruption, morphology and clinical charting.
- Understanding occlusion difficulties that can arise with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
Desirable
- Knowledge of other dental laboratory specialities to enable appliances to be constructed in combination with other technical applications.
- Use of 3 Shape 3D scanners and printers.
Skills & aptitudes
Essential
- Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods to construct appliances.
- Daily Intensive and prolonged periods of concentration are required in conjunction with a high level of manual dexterity and a high level of hand-eye co-ordination.
