Job summary

The Test Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of the Trust’s digital applications and systems, focusing on areas such as Electronic Patient Records (EPR), Clinical Applications,Interoperability, Data Systems, Infrastructure, and Digital Assurance.

 

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Digital Test Lead, the role involves designing, executing,and maintaining manual and automated testing processes, ensuring that all systems meet the highest standards of performance, security, and usability.The Test Engineer will work closely with developers, business analysts, and other cross-functional teams to integrate testing into the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), identify and prioritize defects, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.The role requires both functional and non-functional testing expertise, the ability to mentor junior testers, and effective collaboration with stakeholders to drive quality assurance processes.This position also includes responsibilities for managing relationships with vendors, coordinating Systems Integration Testing (SIT) and User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and overseeing the use of large data sets across relational databases.

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • A broad understanding of testing tools, techniques, and frameworks.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with a methodical approach to identifying and resolving defects.
  • Skilled in using test management and defect tracking tools (e.g.JIRA).
  • Experience in writing and executing manual and automated test cases across functional, regression, system integration, and UAT phases.
  • Proven experience in software testing, ideally within NHS, healthcare, or other public sector digital services.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with developers, business analysts, delivery managers, and clinical stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of test automation frameworks and tools.
  • Strong background in testing digital solutions.

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in software testing and quality assurance, including both manual and automated testing techniques within large-scale, complex environments, preferably within healthcare settings.
  • Experience with EPR systems, clinical applications, data systems, and digital infrastructure.
  • Expertise with automation frameworks such as Selenium or Protractor
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps practices, particularly within CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong experience in functional and non-functional testing, including performance, security, and scalability testing.
  • Knowledge of SDLC

Desirable

  • Testing experience gained in Acute healthcare / NHS setting.
  • Experience working within the NHS or a healthcare environment, with knowledge of healthcare-specific digital systems.
  • Advanced programming skills in languages such as Java, JavaScript, or Python, particularly in the context of writing and maintaining automated tests
  • Experience working with NHS digital platforms and applications
  • Experience in testing cloud-based environments and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Documentation writing skills to correctly reflect requirements and results within test scripts
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
