Fixed-Term Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist: Sponsorship Available

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 7-month fixed term appointment for an Inpatient Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. This will initially be based at Tyson East 2 ward at the Bethlem Hospital although the post holder’s tenure will cover the transition of the ward to its permanent home at the Maudsley Adolescent Unit at the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People. Applicants would need to be able to work on both sites. This is a full-time post although applicants who wished to work part time are still encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be S12/AC approved and will provide clinical leadership to the service and take consultant responsibility for patients (both informal and detained) on the ward.

The role is full time (10 sessions) with 7.5 DCC sessions and 2.5 SPA sessions.

Start date is from End of December 2026.

Main duties of the job

The consultant role involves clinical and medical leadership for both the MDT and junior medical staff. This involves direct assessment of all admissions, formulation of treatment plans in conjunction with the MDT, liaison with other agencies (both clinical and non-clinical), supervision of junior medical staff, chairing of meetings with both clinical and non-clinical agenda, and facilitating discharge through the CPA process.

We work in partnership with colleagues in neighbouring Trusts (Oxleas and South West London and St George’s) as the South London Partnership (SLP) in providing adolescent inpatient care. Adolescent inpatient services are provided by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) through three wards: TE2/MAU, the Bethlem Adolescent Unit (BAU) and the Bethlem Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (BAPICU). Aquarius and Wisteria wards provide general adolescent and eating disorder inpatient services respectively at Springfield Hospital as part of the SLPs integrated inpatient pathway. This gives young people cared for by the SLP access to a broad range of services, without recourse to care far from home.

The successful applicant will also join the SLaM consultant CAMHS on-call rota (see On-call Section).
