Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist (Echo; BSE accredited) Band 7 37.5 per week Permanent
The cardio-respiratory investigations (CRI) unit within Tameside General Hospital provides a range of diagnostic services to the Tameside and Glossop areas. A rare opportunity has arisen for a fully qualified BSE accredited cardiac physiologist to join our existing team. The successful candidate will primarily perform and interpret transthoracic echocardiography independently, including both in-patient and outpatient studies. The physiologist will also support the cardiology team with other echo modalities and assist with training and departmental development. Experience of assisting in myocardial perfusion scan (MPS) would also be a distinct advantage as would experience of holter monitor analysis.
Main duties of the job
1. Deliver a high quality Transthoracic Echo service by performing routine and advanced cardiac ultrasound examinations and formulating a full clinical report for the service user.
2. Providing comprehensive Echo reports to BSE standards for Transthoracic Echo based on findings and clinical history of the patient.
3. Work towards and then maintain BSE departmental accreditation
4. Perform the technical role in TOE. To optimise images of cardiac anatomy. To be responsible for high level decontamination of the TOE probe before and after patient contact. To ensure all decontamination procedures are documented for traceability.
5. Perform/ assist in stress echocardiography. To obtain high quality images of cardiac anatomy to ensure optimal Echo study.
6. Perform echocardiography in acute/urgent setting e.g. during pericardial drain.
7. Adapt studies according to initial findings, clinical indication and physical condition of patients
8. Provide clinical advice and highly specialist professional direction regarding criteria for Echocardiography.
9. React appropriately when echo results require urgent medical advice.
10. Deal with clinically high risk patients.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Cardiac Physiology Degree or Equivalent or other equivalent professional academic qualifications
- Full British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) adult accreditation
Desirable
- Completion of MSc Scientist Training Programme (STP), BSc Clinical Physiology, ONC/BTEC MPPM, or voluntary registration with AHCS
- ILS/ALS
- BSE accredited or nearing completion of echocardiography accreditation
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Demonstrable postregistration experience with evidence of continuing professional development
- Experience of assisting with TOE, contrast and stress echocardiography
- Experience of autonomous working
- Experience of training others in echocardiography to BSE standards
Desirable
- Experience of assisting with myocardial perfusion studies
- Experience of other cardiac diagnostics such as 12-lead ECG and ambulatory ECG monitoring analysis
Skills & Abilities
Essential
- Highly developed specialist practical and theoretical echocardiography knowledge and skills
- Demonstrable knowledge of cardiac anatomy, function and dysfunction in relation to echocardiography
- Excellent written and spoken English
