This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with a passion for infant feeding. We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to promote the provision of breastfeeding as the biological norm and informed infant feeding decisions at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.
Working under the direction of the Infant Feeding specialist Midwife/Neonatal Nurse the postholder will be responsible for evidence based breastfeeding promotion to prospective parents to increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding for those whom breastfeeding is their chosen method of infant feeding. The postholder will have a key role in patient health promotion education and upholding the UNICEF Baby Friendly standards.
Main duties of the job
As the successful postholder you will offer evidence based Infant feeding advice, support and education to mothers within Coventry, Rugby and surrounding areas. You will be required to work alongside Neonatal and midwifery staff, healthcare support workers and students supporting breastfeeding mothers with the skills for successful breastfeeding, expressing breastmilk and promoting positive parenting to enhance relationship building. You will be expected to work across all areas of the perinatal service under the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire umbrella.
You will be required to provide breastfeeding information to pregnant women and your role will involve providing support for paced and responsive bottle-feeding techniques when appropriate. You will participate in annual audits of the service in line with BFI requirements.

Job responsibilities
- Encouraging families to initiate and maintain breastfeeding or early expressing.
- Support families regardless of their chosen method of feeding in ways which enhance close, loving mother and baby relationships
- Supporting the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative and adhering to the World Health Organisation International Code of Marketing Breastmilk substitutes
- Aim to promote healthcare equity by improving maternal and infant health through sustained breastfeeding support
- Promote a positive breastfeeding culture
- Offer personalised support with breastfeeding or expressing within the perinatal service using evidence-based care
- Engage in breastfeeding promotion initiatives
- Work closely with the Infant feeding specialist neonatal nurse / midwife and patient experience team to assist with the creation of optimum infant feeding patient experiences
- Provide breastfeeding promotion information to pregnant women in antenatal clinics, fetal wellbeing unit and antenatal wards as appropriate
- Provide telephone support from the postnatal ward as required, referring to the midwives on the ward and liaising with community midwives as needed
- Promote local breastfeeding support services, distribute relevant leaflets and increase public awareness of support available within the community
- Maintain up to date knowledge of UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative news and policies
- To be involved in the collation of information for BFI audits.
- To communicate with all women, family members, colleagues and visitors effectively
- Recording of confidential and sensitive information in accordance with procedures using a full range of IT packages
- Utilise relevant electronic patient record systems to enter and retrieve patient data ensuring all details are accurately recorded in a timely manner.
- To be fully aware of confidentiality guidelines and exercise judgement and care when exchanging confidential and sensitive patient information.
- Assist in project work as directed e.g. obtaining information from various sources, collation and reporting of data, assisting in the production of reports and other documents.
