Joint Chief Medical Officer: Sponsorship Available

Pennine Care NHS FT

Job summary

Pennine Care and Greater Manchester Mental Health are launching a joint programme to procure and implement a new Electronic Patient Record system. Given the scale and strategic importance of the programme our existing Chief Medical Officer will be seconded on a phased basis to provide executive clinical leadership. This has created a great opportunity for an aspiring Chief Medical Officer to join our Board.

The role will follow a phased increase in hours and accountability: 0.4 WTE from January to June 2027, focused on operational and internal medical leadership; 0.6 WTE from June to December 2027, with enhanced delegation for quality, workforce and governance; and 0.8 WTE from January 2028, progressively assuming strategic, Board, statutory and external responsibilities

Main duties of the job

You will be an exceptional and experienced medical leader committed to providing visible, values-led leadership during an important period of transition and transformation. You will work closely with the substantive Chief Medical Officer, Chief Executive, Chair, Board colleagues, clinical leaders and system partners to ensure that quality, safety, professional standards and medical leadership remain central to decision-making.

The job profile and supporting documentation provides a detailed overview of the phasing of responsibilities between the substantive Chief Medical Officer and incoming Joint Chief Medical Officer during the transition period.

You will be a medically qualified senior leader with current General Medical Council registration, appropriate specialist credentials and substantial experience at executive, board or system level. You will bring a strong record of leading quality, safety, medical workforce and organisational improvement in a complex healthcare environment. You will be collaborative, inclusive and decisive, with the credibility to engage medical colleagues and the ability to provide objective challenge and assurance at Board level.

We welcome applications from individuals seeking a temporary appointment, secondment or other mutually agreed arrangement alongside an appropriate clinical role within the Trust.
