Job summary

The post holder will operate as a member of the service leadership team and as a senior member of the operational service and will contribute to day-to-day operation of service. As a qualified nurse the post holder will lead the clinical operational team to deliver against the service requirement for interventions such as medicines management, medicines administration, non-medical prescribing (under thesupervision of the service’s Clinical Lead and within Pennine Care and national policies), health checks as they relate to drugs and alcohol services.

The post holder will lead the multi-disciplinary team and to provide clinical expertise in a range of recovery and abstinence interventions with particular focus on the development and delivery of psycho-social interventions/psychologically informed interventions.

The post holder will provide strong leadership to SDAS to ensure it performs in the most efficient and effective way; ensuring key performance targets are met whilst providing a safe and efficient service.

The post holder will actively contribute to the overall operational management of the Stockport borough Drug and Alcohol Service (SDAS) and provide full line management to staff eg recruitment, absence manage and grievances.

Main duties of the job

To support the implementation and further development of the role of non-medical prescribing and clinical services in advancing nurse led health care within the service.

To support the development and implementation of nursing duties in theservice including vaccinations, detoxification services, health checks(appropriate to adult drug and alcohol service users), medicines management and administration (under Trust approved guidelines) and to participate in the delivery of these where necessary.

To act as an independent/supplementary prescriber in line with Trust policy and procedure.

To develop and promote the inclusion of psychologically informed practices within the workforce and develop the service’s psychologically informed interventions offer.

To conduct and deliver supervision including psychological informedformulation supervision. Training can be provided for this if required.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant professional qualification and registration e.g. RGN/RMN.
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification.
  • Evidence of recognised education and skills development in psychologically informed interventions/ PSI (as it relates to drug an alcohol work)
  • Immunisation and vaccination accreditation.

Desirable

  • Appropriate management qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of service delivery
  • Experience of staff management and supervisory responsibilities.
  • xperience of delivering nonmedical prescribing interventions as an independent supplementary prescriber (within an agreed scope of practice)
  • Experience of applying psychological therapeutic interventions
  • Experience of working with clients on a one to one and/or group work.
  • Experience of undertaking community detoxification
  • Relevant experience of working in a supervisory/ managerial role in a drug and alcohol service.
  • Experience in assessing client’s health and social care needs in a drug or alcohol setting.
  • Significant experience of working with individuals who have drug and/or alcohol problems.
  • Experience in providing support to vulnerable/ socially excluded individuals/groups.
  • Experience of working as part of a team to achieve a shared vision/goal.
  • Experience of staff management and supervision.
  • Experience of working to address safeguarding issues.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Expert knowledge of substitute prescribing management and clinical and non-clinical treatment interventions.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment processes and risk management
  • Knowledge of the physical, psychological and health effects of drug and alcohol use and appropriate interventions
  • Knowledge of harm minimisation and harm reduction approaches and delivery
  • An understanding of the recovery agenda and ability to apply this to practice.
  • Understanding of recovery capital, asset-based frameworks and building social networks.
  • Understand local community needs and mutual aid networks.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to develop and deliver nurse led interventions for this client group including medicines management, health interventions and psychologically informed drug and alcohol interventions.
  • Be able to support the development of the services BBV work and to conduct pre / post-test discussion in relation to blood borne virus screening
  • The have client facing skills focussed on supporting individuals to achieve recovery at the earliest safe and sustainable point in their treatment journey.
  • Case management skills.
  • Ability to assess and offer an appropriate package of care to this challenging client group.
  • The ability to administer injections under appropriate patient group directives
  • Ability to communicate drug and alcohol specific knowledge and expertise.
  • Awareness of own limitations and how to approach others.
  • Ability to work with policies and procedures relating to the organisation.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Able to demonstrate full understanding of confidentiality issues and the ability to interpret policy into practice.
