Job summary

This role comprises a 40:60 split between Cardiac, Respiratory and Intensive Care (CRIC) directorate lead role and clinical respiratory medicines management services.

60% Lead Clinical Pharmacist for Respiratory to provide a comprehensive Respiratory medicines management service to Evelina and liaison with primary and community care colleagues.

40% to develop, deliver and evaluate clinical pharmacy services to the Cardiac, Respiratory and Intensive Care (CRIC) Directorate in accordance with the objectives set by the Clinical Services Lead Pharmacist in close liaison with the Consultants pharmacists. To train, develop and assess competence of pharmacists working within paediatrics. To act as a role model in the Paediatric pharmacy field and provide a consistently high level of pharmaceutical service for Paediatrics in line with corporate objectives and NHS Plan

Main duties of the job

Leadership

To lead with a focus on the operational delivery of clinical pharmacy services for patients admitted to CRIC Servicesto ensure safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of drugs in these patients.

Management of service

To enable the safe provision of clinical pharmacy services for patients admitted to Cardiac, Respiratory and Intensive Care (CRIC) directorate and the Respiratory serviceto ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in these patients

Evaluation of Service

To monitor clinical pharmacy services for patients admitted to the Cardiac, Respiratory and Intensive Care (CRIC) directorate and the Respiratory serviceto ensure safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs in these patients.

Clinical Practice

To act as a clinical role model for Paediatric pharmacists and demonstrate the ability to provide safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of drugs in these patients

o Demonstrates expert clinical knowledge in Paediatrics particularly respiratory medicine

Research and Development

To develop and deliver on the Research & Development Agenda surrounding Paediatric Medicines Management within Cardiac, Respiratory and Intensive Care (CRIC) directorate and the Paediatric Respiratory service in liaison with the Consultant pharmacists

Person Specification

Qualifications/ Education

Essential

  • Masters degree in pharmacy
  • Specialist knowledge acquired through post graduate diploma level or equivalent training, experience
  • Member General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Independent Prescriber

Desirable

  • Further Clinical Pharmacy Qualifications at Masters Level
  • Evidence of GCP training
  • Member of the Faculty of the Royal College of Pharmacy
  • Member of the Royal College of Pharmacy

Previous experience

Essential

  • Broad experience of clinical pharmacy services to paediatrics
  • Experience of having led a clinical pharmacy service for acutely unwell patients
  • Experience of managing and making appropriate referrals
  • Experience in managing respiratory patients, including Asthma

Desirable

  • Member of Neonatal & Paediatric Pharmacy Group
  • Experience of Co-ordinating the undergraduate and pre-registration student clinical activity in the areas.

Skills/Knowledge/ Ability

Essential

  • Expert advanced ability to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use of drugs in paediatrics
  • Hold expert advanced clinical knowledge in paediatrics
  • Able to conduct a whole-system patient-focused approach to evaluate medicinal therapy
  • Identify new prescribing practices that may impact on budget (horizon scanning).
  • Hold an advanced expert level of clinical reasoning and judgement in relation to medicinal therapy in the acutely unwell patient
  • Hold advanced expert knowledge in Clinical Governance Agenda with specific focus on medicinal therapy.
  • Able to work collaboratively with senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management
  • Identify training needs of staff in order to undertake the roles required.
  • Participate in the clinical training of pharmacists.
  • Maintain a portfolio of practice and be able to provide it as written evidence of level of practice.

Desirable

  • Manage difficult and ambiguous problems
  • Make decisions with limited information
  • Demonstrate an intuitive grasp of situations based on deep tacit understanding.
  • Recognition as a national and/or international expert within the speciality of paediatric pharmacy.
  • Have at least one peer reviewed publication
  • Have advanced knowledge of innovation in relation to medicinal therapy in critical care
