An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the North East & Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEYGLH) as our Solid Cancer Lead Scientist. The successful candidate can choose to be based at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, or Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

NEYGLH provides a comprehensive solid cancer genomics service and is at the forefront of delivering innovative genomic diagnostics across the region.

Genomics is transforming healthcare in England, and NEYGLH continues to evolve and innovate in response to this rapidly developing field. Operating as a single Genomic Laboratory Hub across three sites, we offer a broad range of cutting-edge technologies, supported by established bioinformatics and informatics teams that underpin our technical and scientific services.

About You

  • We are seeking an HCPC-registered scientist with FRCPath, who possesses significant practical and theoretical expertise in Human Genetics.
  • You will bring extensive experience across genomic services, together with several areas of highly specialised knowledge and skills relevant to solid cancer genomics.
  • This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in shaping and delivering high-quality genomic services within a collaborative and forward-thinking organisation.

Main duties of the job

Some of you responsibilities will include :

  • Providing scientific leadership across the NEYGLH solid cancer service.
  • Working closely with GLH Directors, management teams and regional solid cancer teams, while being based at your chosen site.
  • Leading strategic planning and service development across the region.
  • Collaborating with local and national partners, Clinical Directors and leadership teams to support high-quality genomic testing services.
  • Providing expert professional and scientific advice on genomic testing within NEY.
  • Building strong networks and contributing to local, regional and national genomics priorities, supporting collaboration, communication and service development.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Graduate in relevant honours degree in science or additional postgraduate qualification if not appropriate degree.
  • Registered in appropriate scheme for Healthcare Scientist.
  • HCPC registered Clinical Scientist.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (Part 2)

Desirable

  • PhD or equivalent qualification or experience.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in Genetics over a wide range of genomic services relevant to the post.
  • Experience of successfully managing services in a complex organisation’ including people and budgetary management.
  • Experience of providing clinical advice to and liaising with, managers and colleagues at all levels.
  • Significant Broad practical and theoretical knowledge of Human Genetics with several areas of highly specialist skills and detailed knowledge in genomic service relevant to the post.
  • Evidenced experience of working across organisational boundaries including statutory, voluntary and private sector.
  • Evidence of a collaborative management style coupled with improving quality of service provision.

Desirable

  • Research experience as evidenced by publication, supervision or successful grant application.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and Quality Management in a laboratory environment particularly audit, clinical audit and audit processes.
  • Able to maximise leadership skills of people through effective standard-setting, monitoring, feedback, appraisal, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and provide expert advice on issues.
  • Ability to communicate complex information to colleagues, patients and relatives, clinicians and senior managers.
  • Able to develop successful relationships with individuals and groups from a range of backgrounds.
  • Able to negotiate effectively with individuals and organisations to achieve appropriate outcomes for the service .
  • Ability to initiate and deliver research as evidenced by research qualifications, publications and/or grant applications.
  • Proficient skills in IT including knowledge of data bases and spreadsheets.
