Job Summary

Evergreen is an 8 bedded general adolescent unit in Luton which opened in February 2023.

The development of this service was in conjunction with children, parents and carers who have experience of in-patient admission. Young people are helping us plan the ethos of the unit, recruit the staff and think about how we can deliver the best care. The space will provide specialist, short-term care for children and young people aged 13-17 with severe or complex mental health difficulties. You will be working alongside a diverse multi-disciplinary team that reflects the population that we serve. Our vision is to make a positive difference in young people’s lives by providing the highest quality mental health service to our local communities.

Main duties of the job

  • To work alongside qualified nursing and occupational therapy staff to jointly co-ordinate the day-to-day running of the service and support the teams to deliver a robust, high quality clinical service.
  • To develop and maintain strong links with community resources, including within the trust, local authority and third sector organisations in order to refer patients and support their engagement in preparation for discharge.
  • To assist with visits and events in the community when appropriate.
  • To develop specialist knowledge and skills in child and adolescent mental health, and to train and educate others in their practice.To support with discharge planning.
  • To work alongside and feedback to a well-established MDT and ensure effective communication with all relevant personnel both internal and external to the Trust.
  • To practice within professional guidelines and promote professional practice in clinical area.
  • To ensure continuous personal development through the utilisation of regular supervision, annual appraisal and training where appropriate.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualification/ Training

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent mental health experience

Desirable

  • Foundation degree in mental health studies
  • Educated to degree level and an ability to operationalize this depth of knowledge into clinical practice or ability to learn at this level

Experience

Essential

  • Working with young people/ adolescents in a therapeutic environment.
  • Managing challenging and aggressive behaviour.
  • Working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment and knowledge of methods to develop culturally sensitive practice.
  • Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate.
  • Experience of providing and receiving complex, sensitive information.

Desirable

  • Working in an in-patient setting.
  • Working with young people or adults who have experienced mental health difficulties.
  • Experience of note keeping, making entries for therapeutic interventions.
  • Facilitating therapeutic groups and individual interventions.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work with patients on an individual or group basis, focusing on their recovery pathway.
  • Ability to enable and empower patients in a way that increases their self esteem, raises their confidence and help them to identify positive qualities in self.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills relevant to the legal requirements of client care and related issues and the documentation of that care.
  • Ability to support the multidisciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of mental and physical care appropriate to the needs of the client group and clinical speciality and the ability to use evidence based approaches in the delivery of care.
  • Experience of devising groups and activities.
  • Ability to recognise stress in oneself and others and manage appropriately accessing additional support where necessary.
  • Ability to work autonomously
