This post is based at Staffordshire Children’s Hospital at Royal Stoke which is part of the University
Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. The paediatric department at UHNM primarily delivers acute paediatric care to the local children of Staffordshire and beyond.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking a locum Paediatric Critical Care Consultant. The post holder will be providing 8 weeks of consultant of the week (COW) cover to PICU and 8 weeks to HDU per year, and take part in 1 in 5.5 on-call rota for PICU, including evenings and weekends.
In addition, there is also time allocated to do educational supervision and attending departmental meetings.

Qualifications and Skills
Essential
- Fully registered with GMC
- BLS/PLS/PiLS Trained
- APLS or PALS provider
- Clinical training and experience in Paediatric Intensive Care equivalent to that required for UK CCT in paediatrics.
Desirable
- A post-graduated qualification e.g MRCPCH, MSc, DCH, DCCH, MBA or other equivalent diplomas.
- A post graduate qualification eg MD, PhD
- Entry onto the specialty register for Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Clinical training and experience in general paediatrics equivalent to that required for UK CCST in paediatrics.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Level 3 safeguarding training
Desirable
- Experience and understanding of using evidence based medicine and clinical audit to support decision making
- Experience in the managemend of children ith life limiting conditions, both malignant and non-malignant.
- ience in managing end of life Audit or service improvement project in end of life care.
Management and Administrative Experience
Essential
- Willingness to take part in teaching
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Commitment to continuing medical education
Desirable
- Formal training in research or teaching methods
- Training the trainers course
Management and Administrative Experience:

- Understanding of management issues including medical discipline; clinical governance, service planning
- Willingness to participate in service developments

- Willingness to manage and develop leadership skills e.g. project work; mentoring junior staff

- Ability and means to meet the travel requirements of the post
- Residence allowing return to base within 30 minutes if required
