Job summary

We have opportunities for an enthusiastic anaesthetist to join our vibrant and growing department. This post has arisen due to expansion of services and replacement sessions for trust, university, and external roles that members of our team have taken on.

They would suit anaesthetists who are looking to spend a year with us, either as a stepping stone to a substantive consultant role, to enhance their clinical expertise or to experience life in a Central London Teaching Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Essential criteria:o Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise, FRCA or equivalent; current General Medical Council (London), Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience

o Applicants who are within six months of obtaining CCT may apply

o Start date January 2027

University College London Hospital is a major teaching hospital. As a regional cancer centre and tertiary referral centre we have a challenging and complex workload. We have particular expertise in bariatrics, upper and lower GI, orthopaedics, urology, paediatric, head and neck, thoracic and endocrine surgery. Our labour ward delivers 7000 babies a year and has an interest in high-risk medical patients including GUCH. We have built a new hospital – Grafton Way, in addition to the current services, which has a proton beam therapy unit and an 8 theatre short stay surgical suite

Life outside work is also rich and rewarding. The hospitals are situated in a lively corner of central London, a short walk from the British Museum, Regent’s Park, Covent Garden, Oxford Street, and Kings Cross. Travel to the hospital is easy on public transport, or by bike, from all over London and the surrounding area.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
• On GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within 6 months of attainment of CCT in anaesthesia at date of interview
• FRCA or equivalent anaesthetic experience

Desirable

• Higher degree

Clinical Experience

Essential

• Completed a recognised period of training leading to a CCT in anaesthesia or has gained equivalent experience
• Experience in anaesthesia for major surgical procedures including major laparoscopic surgery
• 6 months experience working in the NHS

Desirable

• Experience of multidisciplinary pre-assessment and pre-operative preparation of complex patients
• Evidence of commitment to service improvement / clinical excellence
• Broad range of experience specifically in ‘outside areas’ including paediatric radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, CT, endoscopy

Clinical Skills

Essential

• Demonstrate an ability to perform the specific clinical procedures relevant to the post
• Demonstration of a subspecialty interest relevant to this trust in which significant clinical experience gained
• Understanding of clinical risk management
• Clear logical thinking showing an analytical / scientific approach

Desirable

• Advanced airway management skills and experience of managing difficult airway
• A Fellowship or other significant specialist experience
• Ability to cover both the general and obstetric on-call rotas as required

Clinical Knowledge

Essential

• Appropriate level of clinical knowledge for the post
• Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice
• Shows awareness of own limitations

Desirable

• Demonstrates breath of awareness of issues relating to clinical anaesthesia

Audit, Quality Improvement, Management & IT

Essential

• Evidence of participation in clinical governance
• Evidence of completion of audit cycle or quality improvement initiative
• Ability to mentor both medical and nursing staff

Desirable

• Management course completed or evidence of knowledge of management structures & processes
• Knowledge or interest in data to improve patient care and utilisation of digitalised systems

Research, Teaching skills and experience

Essential

• Teaching on formal educational courses
• Evidence of involvement in education of colleagues (trainees, AHP’s nurses)

Desirable

• Show a regular commitment to teaching Evidence of organisational / leadership ability: e.g. setting up and directing courses, educational programmes etc.
• Evidence of research activity & publications
• Evidence of working with patients / public to deliver research or improve services
• Higher taught (e.g. MSc) or research (e.g. MD or PHD) degree
