Job Summary

The preterm birth role is designed specifically for the needs of pregnant women/birthing people who are at high risk of premature birth.

The post holder will work within a Preterm Birth service, which is led by a consultant obstetrician. The post holder will be responsible for the triage and management of referrals, provide clinical midwifery care to women/birthing people at risk of preterm birth and facilitate the appropriate follow up care with the multidisciplinary team.

To provide pregnant women/birthing people with risk factors for preterm labour and birth with high quality, safe midwifery care. The care will be evidence based and holistic in meeting women’s/birthing people’s individual needs and the midwife will be expected to work autonomously within the guidelines and sphere of professional practice. The post holder will act as a mentor, a leader and effective role model, providing essential support in complex and sensitive situations. In addition, the post holder will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the Element 5 of Saving Babies Lives (SBLV3) care bundle across the Trust and contributing to the reduction of stillbirth.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management, clinical leadership and auditing and improving the Preterm Birth clinic, based within the antenatal clinic.

The post holder will liaise with the lead consultants for the Preterm Birth clinic and aid with the triaging of women and birthing people referred into the service. A key component of this role is to provide midwifery input and act as a failsafe to birthing people that are accessing these high risk obstetric services.

Education criteria

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and its application
  • Accredited Mentorship Course

Desirable

  • Diploma / Degree Level

  • Ability to travel to other sites

  • Flexible approach to working hours and practices

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of implementing antenatal screening
  • Ability to be a mentor to student midwives/nurses/MCA`s
  • Experience of safeguarding issues/working with vulnerable families

Skills, Ability & Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical skills, in particular: Suturing, Cannulation, Supervision of epidural infusion
  • Knowledge of NMC Code of Conduct, Guidelines and Professional Practice
  • Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of Midwifery
  • Understanding of learning and teaching styles and their application
  • Knowledge of Midwifery issues in the wider context of the NHS
  • IT literate on Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Good verbal and written English which can be evidenced at interview or IELTs level 7 (in all elements) or above

Desirable

  • Awareness and knowledge of vulnerable adult and child Protection issues
