We are looking for a Mortuary Manager to lead the Mortuary and Bereavement services in Hull. This is a busy, friendly department.

The service consists of two mortuaries, Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI) and Castle Hill Hospital (CHH.) HRI is a designated Regional Forensic Centre.

The Mortuary manager is responsible for the professional leadership, development, control and maintenance of an efficient and effective Mortuary service. Theywill operate on behalf of the Pathology Network Group on wider Trust issues working with other managers to develop strategic and operational pathways for the service.

In addition to strategic and managerial responsibilities the post holder will perform and oversee a wide range of technical/scientific duties to aid pathologists/clinicians in establishing a cause of death.

The nature of the work is variable and unpredictable and the post holder must be prepared to work flexibly and under pressure.

With the formation of the Humber Health Partnership there may be the future opportunity for wider service development to a group-wide mortuary service but this is not yet defined. This may present an exciting career prospect to lead a very large service operating across multiple sites.

Main duties of the job

In this interesting and varied role, you will have responsibility for the line management and supervision of site-based Mortuary and Bereavement Service, providing strong leadership to all staff and budget and financial management within defined budget allocation.

You will act as a professional role model engaging all staff in trust values, maintaining patient/relative privacy, dignity and respect at all times ensuring positive relative experience in all aspects of after life care, sharing good practice within the Mortuary and Bereavement service and ensuring staff/deceased and bereaved relatives’ safety at all times.

You will have overarching responsibility for the designation and storage of the deceased and be responsible for ordering and purchasing equipment, recording and overseeing lawful disposal of human tissue, products of conception and Police Forensic exhibits and logging, upholding the Human Tissue Authority License safe storage and return of deceased patients’ property.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
  • Relevant degree qualification
  • Registered Health Care Science Council or other relevant body
  • Full driving license

Desirable

  • Management qualification
  • Member of Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists

Experience

Essential

  • 5 years in post as Senior APT
  • Relevant experience in management of public and hospital mortuaries
  • Current experience / recently working as Qualifed APT
  • Experience of major incident, excess deaths and pandemic incident planning
  • Experience of staff and resource planning to deal with high workloads in a changing environment

Desirable

  • Relevant bereavement experience of qualification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive experience of mortuary practice and procedure
  • Extensive knowledge of Clinical Governance, Quality Management and Quality Improvement
  • Extensive knowledge of service specific legislation and guidance i.e. Coroner’s Act 1988, HTA, safe working
  • Extensive experience of dealing with bereaved relatives
  • oExperience investigating and resolving complaints

Skills

Essential

  • Extensive IT skills
  • Must be able to communicate with staff, other managers, and other professionals at all levels
  • Able to work under pressure and take intiative
  • Able to plan and manage daily workload in presence of changing and competing demands
